Chapter description[]
- A voice calls Shadowsight's name as he floats through a dreamless haze. The tom feels strange and as though he had been asleep for a long time when he opens his eyes. All around him is gray mist, and slowly he makes out the shape of a skinny black tom whom he struggles to name. However, as the cat speaks to him, Shadowsight recognizes him as Spiresight. The medicine cat is overjoyed but confused to see him, as he had believed that Spiresight had gone to StarClan. Spiresight explains to him that he had chosen not to, so that he could watch over him.
- Spiresight hesitates for a moment before revealing to Shadowsight what had happened. He explains that three nights prior, Shadowsight had been attacked, and while unconscious had been thrown into the ravine which they are currently in. Shadowsight remembers the pain and asks if he is dead, but is told that he isn't. He comes to the realization that he is a ghost, but finds it hard to believe what Spiresight has told him. The tom briefly panics about his position, but takes a moment to take in his current situation and where he is. He notes that he isn't on ShadowClan territory.
- Spiresight tells Shadowsight he wanted to find help, but stayed in case he woke up. He notes that he must have begun to heal from his injuries if he was speaking. The tom states that Shadowsight is hovering between life and death. Shadowsight spots his body, taking in how battered he looks and that he truly looks dead except for the faint rising of his own chest. The young tom thanks Spiresight for all he has done, but tells him that they need to contact a medicine cat so he can have his wounds treated. The two toms work out that Shadowsight's attacker was a Clan cat that masked his scent to hide which Clan he was from.
- The two toms talk about the incident, and Shadowsight reveals that he was heading to the medicine cat meeting. Spiresight shares his concerns with Shadowsight, noting that he had heard some troubling talk from his Clanmates. The medicine cat also reveals that some of his Clanmates had thought of him as odd, but doesn't believe they would try to kill him. The black tom promises to keep the young cat safe, and that while they are able to communicate that they should try and figure out what happened to him. Shadowsight asks him how are they are to do that, prompting Spiresight to press against him, blurring his vision. When it clears, Shadowsight notes that they are at the old SkyClan camp. He sees his parents as well as Squirrelflight, Rootpaw, and Tree gathered. Shadowsight asks why there are cats present from all the Clans, and Spiresight explains that they are rebel cats who oppose Bramblestar. Shadowsight tries to get his parents' attention, but they cannot see him. He tries to approach Tree and Rootpaw as well, but he gets no response.
- Shadowsight is desperate as he tries to get the SkyClan toms' attention, but Spiresight tells him not all cats of Sisters' blood can see ghosts. The young medicine cat listens to his advice, but is distracted by his father's voice. He hears Tigerstar address the rebels, stating that his son is dead, as he would not have deserted ShadowClan. Dovewing adds that he may have left without telling anyone, as they had done. Shadowsight tries once again to get their attention, yowling for them. Shadowsight is distressed and becomes aware of himself, and with the urging of Spiresight, they return to the ravine overlooking his unconscious body. Shadowsight notes that his breathing is slowing, and with terror, wonders how much time he has left.
