"No. I can't. Brokenstar says all warriors need to focus on how ShadowClan can protect itself from the other Clans. Families, elders, cats who can't help with the safety of ShadowClan—they don't matter right now." |
— Volepaw to Nightpelt in Exile from ShadowClan, page 82 |
Volewhisper is a tiny[6] light brown[7] tom[8] with yellow eyes,[7] and a scarred left hind leg.[9]
History[]
In the Super Editions[]
Yellowfang's Secret[]
- Volekit is born to Featherstorm and Blizzardwing, along with his siblings Mosskit and Dawnkit. When his brother, Mosskit, is apprenticed to Brokenstar at less than three moons of age, Volekit is jealous and complains to his new leader that he wants to be an apprentice as well. Brokenstar promises him that when he's the same size as his brother, he can be apprenticed to Clawface. The kit, excited, tries to make himself look bigger, but is stopped by his horrified mother.
- When Fernshade is kitting, Volekit tries to see what's going on, but is sent away to play with Mosspaw by Yellowfang. When Mosspaw is killed during training, Brokenstar takes on Volekit as his apprentice, telling Clawface that he owes it to Mosspaw to apprentice his brother, even though Volekit and his littermates are far too young to be apprenticed. Volepaw is mentioned in Yellowfang's thoughts to have died soon after of an infected wound when Brokenstar begins forcing the apprentices to battle rats during their training.
In the Novellas[]
Blackfoot's Reckoning[]
- Blackfoot is given a life by Badgerfang and he is forced to remember his nephew's apprentice ceremony. In the memory, Blackfoot recalls Volepaw's death and that it was caused by an infected rat bite. He reasons with himself that Volepaw's, and also Mosspaw's deaths could have happened to any cat.

Exile from ShadowClan[]
- "Yeah! We're ShadowClan apprentices, not a couple of outcasts! We have rights to it first!"
- ―Volepaw confronting Nightpelt, thinking that he will steal his prey Exile from ShadowClan, page 80
- As leaf-bare grows into newleaf, Volepaw continues to grow and learn the ways of a warrior. Nightpelt sees him and Littlepaw out hunting, and Volepaw praises Littlepaw for his excellent catch. He exclaims that the mouse never even saw that he was there. Nightpelt approaches Littlepaw and Volepaw, and Volepaw turns defensive, thinking that Nightpelt is going to take his prey. Nightpelt calls Volepaw and Littlepaw ill-mannered and says that they need to learn some respect. Nightpelt lets the apprentices take the mouse, saying they need it more than he does, and notes that these two cats are looking very thin and worries that Brokenstar is not making sure they are fed.
- Soon, Nightpelt gets the idea to ask Volepaw if he wants to see Featherstorm, his mother. Although interested at first, Volepaw rejects Nightpelt's offer, saying that Brokenstar wants strong cats who focus on ShadowClan. He mews that those living outside of ShadowClan's camp should not matter. Nightpelt asks Volepaw again if he truly does not wish to see his mother, explaining that she is very close by. Volepaw is shocked, and Littlepaw looks at him in anger. The brown tabby apprentice encourages Volepaw to leave without seeing Featherstorm, saying that they are already late in meeting their mentors at the Carrionplace. Nightpelt is worried for the two apprentices, saying that the Carrionplace is dangerous and instead advises them to hunt elsewhere. Littlepaw says that they are not meeting their mentors to hone their hunting skills, and Volepaw adds that they are going to fight rats. Nightpelt, although concerned, offers to escort the young cats to the Carrionplace to meet with Brokenstar and Clawface.
- Volepaw and Littlepaw assure Nightpelt that he does not need to worry, and that their mentors will step in if there are any issues with the rats. Volepaw says that he cannot wait to become a warrior before Dawnpaw, and Littlepaw says that he and Volepaw will be the best of their litters, remarking that Dawnpaw, Wetpaw, and Brownpaw will be very envious of them once they become warriors. Nightpelt travels to Carrionplace with the cats, despite their objections, and he watches Littlepaw and Volepaw take on the rats. Brokenstar, Clawface, and Nightpelt step away while the two apprentices test their skills, and although they are scared, they put up a brave fight. Volepaw is injured in this battle with the rats.
- Later that night, Clawface and Runningnose bring Volepaw to join Nightpelt's group of cats, not wanting ShadowClan to know the young apprentice survived his injuries. Runningnose says that a rat cut through his leg and left him with a permanent injury. Brokenstar decided to not allow Runningnose any more herbs to treat Volepaw, so he and Clawface snuck out Volepaw so he would have a chance at survival and get a second chance. Volepaw decides to make his nest right next to Featherstorm, finally reuniting with his mother. Runningnose, in order to protect Volepaw, has decided to tell Brokenstar and the rest of ShadowClan that Volepaw succumbed to his injuries and ascended to StarClan. Once Clawface realizes what Brokenstar has done, he decided that he did not want to watch another cat die.
- Nightpelt and the others watch Volepaw slowly recover, and Nightpelt takes the chance to talk with him about what happened. Although Nightpelt knows that Volepaw will not be the same cat, he tries to encourage him and make him feel welcome and valued in his new home. Volepaw still believes that he is useless, and Nightpelt objects to this. He says that Volepaw will get stronger, but Volepaw objects and says that he should forget about becoming a warrior due to his inability to walk normally. Volepaw leaves Nightpelt, and makes his way back to his best to sleep. Nightpelt and Featherstorm watch Volepaw nap, and say that the peace will disappear once he wakes up. Nightpelt assures Featherstorm that Volepaw just needs time to heal, but their discussion is cut short when Nightpelt scents ShadowClan cats. Featherstorm awakens Volepaw and attempts to shoo him into their den, much to Volepaw's annoyance.
- As time goes on, Volepaw's hip continues to heal and he shows great progress. Nightpelt still worries about Volepaw, though, and tries to reassure the young cat that he is not useless. Nightpelt tries to relate to Volepaw, explaining that his inability to breathe properly contributed to his early retirement. Volepaw tries to object, but Nightpelt cuts him off and explains that each cat has something special to contribute to their little group and that they are what a Clan should be. Nightpelt offers to help teach Volepaw to hunt properly, after finding out from Volepaw that Brokenstar did not care about hunting training, only battle training. Volepaw admits that sometimes the other warriors would teach the apprentices in secret, but for the most part they managed the best they could. Nightpelt is sympathetic, even when Volepaw asserts that Brokenstar was right and that ShadowClan needs to put itself first. Nightpelt tells Volepaw that he is strong, and they will start with the basics of hunting so he can understand how to do it. Volepaw is excited and cannot wait to become a silent killer, especially after learning that he will need to be quiet since his injury reduces how fast he will be able to run.
- During their exploration, Nightpelt and Volepaw come across Brightflower. Although Nightpelt is unsure whether or not he can trust Brightflower, the tom notices that the orange tabby cat is too upset and distraught to notice Volepaw standing there as well. As Brightflower explains that Marigoldkit and Mintkit were supposedly killed by Yellowfang, Volepaw looks on with shock on his face. Brightflower, not wanting to face ShadowClan without her kits, joins Nightpelt and Volepaw as they head back to camp. Nightpelt leaves soon after, with Volepaw calling after him.
- Volepaw alerts Nightpelt to Runningnose bringing more ShadowClan cats into Nightpelt's camp, and they welcome Cinderfur and the others as they talk about what to do with Brokenstar. During another nighttime talk, Volepaw sits next to Nightpelt and watches anxiously as the older cats debate on how to handle Brokenstar's tyranny. Volepaw wants to go with Nightpelt and the others to confront ShadowClan, saying that he is strong enough to fight. Nightpelt acknowledges Volepaw's growth and agrees, but also says that Brokenstar does not know that he is still alive, and Nightpelt wants to protect Volepaw. Volepaw agrees and stays behind with Archeye and the other cats too old to confront Brokenstar and save the stolen ThunderClan kits. After the battle, Volepaw returns to ShadowClan's camp the following morning and is warmly and happily greeted by his family, who had faith that Volepaw was still alive. He later stands near the fresh-kill pile with his mother. After Nightpelt agrees to become leader, Volepaw stands next to Dawncloud, Ashfur, and Littlecloud, looking up at Nightpelt on the Great Rock at the Gathering where he announces his leadership.

Trivia[]
Interesting facts[]
- In Yellowfang's Secret, it is said that Volepaw died due to an infected rat bite,[25] though this was later revealed to have been a lie by Runningnose and Clawface to protect Volepaw's injuries.[26] Following Brokenstar and his followers' exile from ShadowClan, Volepaw returns to ShadowClan.[27] In Blackfoot's Reckoning, Blackfoot recalls how Volepaw died from the rat bite, believing Runningnose's ruse and referring to his apprentice name.[28] It is likely that Volewhisper died sometime between his return to ShadowClan under Nightstar's leadership and before Blackfoot rejoined ShadowClan, possibly of the Carrionplace disease.[29]
Continuity[]
The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.
- On Vicky's Facebook, Volepaw has yellow eyes.[30]
- In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, Volepaw is mentioned to have been one of Brokenstar's apprentices and to have died mysteriously before becoming a warrior.[31]
Quotes[]
- "Yeah! We're going to the Carrionplace to fight rats! Brokenstar says every ShadowClan warrior needs to be a tough enough fighter to fight rats. It's going to be part of our assessment to become warriors!"
- ―Volepaw Exile from ShadowClan, page 83
- Volepaw: "You don't have to worry. Our mentors will be there to look after us if we have any problems. Which we won't."
- Littlepaw: "Brokenstar and Clawface are the toughest warriors in the forest, and we're going to be just like them. Right! If we prove ourselves fighting rats, we'll be the first of the new apprentices to be made warriors!"
- Exile from ShadowClan, page 84
- Volepaw: "Don't look at me like that! Brokenstar is a great leader! He's made ShadowClan the most feared Clan!"
- Nightpelt: "Brokenstar could spend a little less time thinking about conquering the other Clans... and a little more time looking out for his own Clan. Volepaw... have you forgotten that Brokenstar was willing to let you die?"
- Exile from ShadowClan, page 117
