Whistlebreeze is a little[6] gray tabby she-cat[1] with amber eyes.[7]

Whistlebreeze is a WindClan medicine cat under Harestar's leadership in the lake territories. She was born to Featherpelt and Oatclaw as Whistlekit alongside her littermates, Flutterkit and Songkit. After becoming a warrior apprentice, Whistlepaw originally trained under Hootwhisker. However, after helping Kestrelflight in the medicine den and learning her odd dreams were from StarClan, she began training with him as a medicine cat. During her apprenticeship, Whistlepaw discovered Frostpaw injured on the moor after Splashtail's attempt to murder her. She cared for Frostpaw's wounds in secret and brought her to Smoky's barn where her life was saved by a Twoleg healer. Whistlepaw was confined to camp for faking Frostpaw's death and was severely wounded attempting to save her little sister, Leafkit, when a tree fell into WindClan's nursery.

Soon after, she received a dream not from StarClan of mewling kits suffering in a storm, requiring the Clans to pay an unknown debt. Her dream prompted the Clans to send Whistlepaw, Icewing, Dovewing, Ivypool, and Rootspring to investigate. Despite nearly being kidnapped by Twolegs on the way, Whistlepaw successfully discovered the wildcats and helped save Tumble Leap, Stalk Purr, and their kits from captivity, reuniting them with their remaining kin. After returning to the Clans, Whistlepaw and Frostpaw received their medicine cat names together, with Whistlepaw becoming Whistlebreeze.

At the half-moon meeting, Kestrelflight announces that he has been interested in taking on an apprentice and has noticed Whistlepaw's skills when she helped him treat Emberfoot's whitecough. Shadowsight and the other medicine cats argue if it would be a good idea to train an apprentice without StarClan's approval since they are still silent. Mothwing suggests Whistlepaw can still learn the medicinal aspects, but Willowshine and Alderheart disagree. However, Kestrelflight firmly mews that it is his decision alone and he intends to train Whistlepaw despite the absence of StarClan.

A Light in the Mist[]

After the Clans' connection with StarClan is restored, Kestrelflight announces that are more reasons to celebrate, as StarClan has approved of his choice to train Whistlepaw and has said she will become a fine medicine cat in time.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

Whistlepaw: "It'll be good to have another apprentice here. I've only been training for a few moons. I started out as a warrior apprentice."
Frostpaw: "You didn't know you were chosen by StarClan?"
Whistlepaw: "Not at first. But then I helped Kestrelflight when he was treating some sick cats, and he offered to train me. That was when I realized that the weird dreams I'd been having were actually StarClan trying to get in touch with me."

Mothwing introduces her new apprentice, Frostpaw, to Kestrelflight and Whistlepaw. Whistlepaw is delighted that there is a new apprentice to speak with, explaining how she recently started her training and how she used to be a warrior apprentice. Whistlepaw explains how she used to help Kestrelflight in his den until he asked if she wanted to be his apprentice. Barkface, Kestrelflight's mentor, has already taught her many times from StarClan. Frostpaw thinks that Whistlepaw is nice, and Whistlepaw shows her how to communicate with StarClan by touching the Moonpool. At the next Moonpool meeting, Whistlepaw excitedly greets Frostpaw.

Sky[]

The medicine cats meet at the Moonpool for an emergency meeting to discuss the catmint shortage. They decide to send a joint-Clan patrol with Alderheart, Fidgetflake, and Puddleshine since Mothwing and Kestrelflight have apprentices and they would be too inexperienced to be left alone.

When Frostpaw receives a vision from Reedwhisker, Splashtail prompts her to speak with an experienced medicine cat to verify it as a true vision. Frostpaw decides to speak to Whistlepaw in the middle of the night. However, Frostpaw is attacked while on her way to WindClan.

Whistlepaw: "Frostpaw. Swallow. How are you feeling? I need to get you somewhere warm where you can heal. I’m not sure if the herbs I’ve given you are enough. Are you sure you won’t let me take you back to the medicine den? I promise you’ll be safe there."

Whistlepaw discovers Frostpaw severely wounded on WindClan territory and provides aid to her injuries. Honoring Frostpaw's request for secrecy, Whistlepaw brings Frostpaw to the horseplace where Smoky lives. There, she teaches his kits, Little Daisy and Coriander, how to make a poultice to treat Frostpaw's wound. To protect Frostpaw's safety, Whistlepaw stages Frostpaw's death by placing blood and some of Frostpaw's fur where she found her, deceiving her Clan by informing them of Frostpaw's demise.

After Frostpaw reveals the murder attempt against her, Whistlepaw confesses to helping her when she was injured and keeping her secret, as well as faking Frostpaw's death. Harestar promises that she will be punished, and Kestrelflight is disappointed in her. Later, when Sunbeam's patrol meets Breezepelt's, Breezepelt mentions that Harestar and Kestrelflight are upset with Whistlepaw. At the half-moon meeting, Whistlepaw is not present, evidently left behind by Kestrelflight. When Sunbeam is caught on WindClan territory by Crowfeather and taken to WindClan camp, Whistlepaw sympathizes with her, saying she is still being punished for keeping Frostpaw a secret. When Harestar approaches, Whistlepaw wishes her good luck and leaves her.
After a tree falls on WindClan's camp, Whistlepaw desperately tries to save Leafkit. Frostpaw convinces her to come out so that they can figure out how to save the kit, and with help, Whistlepaw struggles back out, injured. Kestrelflight takes her to the medicine den. When Leafkit is rescued, Sunbeam and Nightheart go to see Whistlepaw, who is badly injured. Frostpaw helps care for her, telling her that she is fortunate to have survived and apologizing for involving her in her troubles. Kestrelflight returns and apologizes to both apprentices, before sending Frostpaw away.

Whistlebreeze: "It was the Twoleg who saved you, not me."
Frostpaw: "I would have died on the moor if not for you. If I had, who knows what would have become of RiverClan [...] I know I got you into trouble, but I’m grateful to you for taking the risk."

Cloverfoot informs Sunbeam of Whistlepaw's vision when she arrives to speak to Tigerstar. At the next Gathering, Harestar reports that WindClan miss Whistlepaw and questions if the medicine cats have heard any news about her. After Whistlepaw returns, she travels to the Moonpool to receive her medicine cat name and rushes to meet Frostpaw, asking if her wound still hurts. Whistlepaw receives the name Whistlebreeze and Frostpaw assures her that she will be a great medicine cat, remarking that she already saved her life. However, Whistlebreeze believes it was the Twoleg healer who saved Frostpaw. Kestrelflight agrees that without Whistlebreeze, the Clans may never have doubted Splashtail, but adds that he wished she had told him when Frostpaw was hurt. Frostpaw defends her and Whistlebreeze says she was glad she made the risk. As Frostpaw's ceremony is about to begin, Mothwing praises Whistlebreeze and Frostpaw as exceptional cats who exceeded all expectations.

Personality and Traits[]

Whistlebreeze is a loyal, dedicated, friendly, and eager cat.[8] She is unusually humble, believing that her actions to save Frostpaw were nothing[9] and attributing her survival to the Twoleg healer.[10] Moreover, she rejects Galestar's praise of her wisdom and flexibility to accept strange new ideas.[11] Whistlebreeze shows great sympathy for others, such as when Sunbeam is caught trespassing.[12] Likewise, Ivypool believes Whistlebreeze's sympathy for the wildcats to be more than a medicine cat would normally feel for an injured cat or a queen near to kitting.[13] Additionally, she is a poor liar[14] and reluctant to deceive others even for moral ends.[15] She showed great bravery in her willingness to help Frostpaw[16] and her attempted rescue of Leafkit despite injury to herself.[17]

Frostdawn is Whistlebreeze's fellow medicine cat and a dear friend.

Frostdawn is Whistlebreeze's fellow medicine cat who was the sole apprentice alongside her and with whom she received her medicine cat name. While Frostpaw initially felt shy around the older apprentice, she was relieved not to be the only trainee. Frostpaw was impressed by Whistlepaw's connection to StarClan[18] and sought her out for advice when StarClan sent her a vision of Reedwhisker's murder, believing Whistlepaw would keep it a secret.[19] Frostpaw could not wait to see her friend, but she was attacked before she could reach her.[20] When Whistlepaw found her bleeding out on the moor, she begged for permission to fetch Kestrelflight. However, Whistlepaw respected Frostpaw's desire to be kept secret and risked punishment by taking herbs from the medicine den,[21] bringing Frostpaw to the horseplace,[16] and following Frostpaw's plan to convince WindClan that a fox or buzzard took her.[15]
Despite Frostpaw's fear, Whistlepaw promised she would to whatever she could to protect her, allowing Frostpaw to confide in her about the vision and who might have attacked her. Yet, Frostpaw feared she could not rely on Whistlepaw not to blurt out the truth,[16] and Whistlepaw admitted that, being a bad liar, she would not be able to take Frostpaw to the Moonpool.[14] Moreover, Whistlepaw was reluctant to speak out at the Gathering to present her false evidence of Frostpaw's death.[15] However, when Frostpaw revealed herself to the Clans, Whistlepaw immediately stood up for her, scared but resolute.[22]
When Whistlepaw was trapped by a tree that fell into WindClan's nursery in her attempt to rescue Leafkit, Frostpaw soothed and helped to free her.[17] While caring for Whistlepaw's wounds, Frostpaw apologized for getting her into trouble, but Whistlepaw assured Frostpaw that everything was worth it.[9] Frostpaw was proud when Whistlebreeze received her full name and assured her friend that, having already saved her own life, she would be a great medicine cat.[10]

Leafcurl is Whistlebreeze's younger sister whom she risked her life to save after a tree fell into WindClan's nursery. Whistlepaw bore great injury to herself while pushing through the tangled branches to reach Leafkit, only relenting after Frostpaw promised that the others would work out a way to get to her.[17] Whistlepaw explained to Frostpaw that she acted so rashly because Leafkit's death would devastate their parents and harm WindClan's future.[9]

Galestar believed Whistlepaw could help repay the Clan's debt to the wildcats.

Galestar was a forgotten leader of WindClan and StormClan who hoped that by contacting the Clans, they could repay their debt to the wildcats who saved her. Importantly, she chose to contact Whistlepaw because of her willingness to consider strange new ideas, hoping to rouse her curiousity with the StormClan symbol. However, Galestar did not expect Whistlepaw's visions to show her the storm in which she and her kits were separated from StormClan.[11] Initially, Whistlepaw felt dejected by her visions, beliving the cat who sent the visions was just as vague as StarClan.[23] After meeting Galestar by traveling through the Star Tree, Whistlepaw sympathyzed with her abandonment by Stripestar and pledged not to let Galestar down.[11] Whistlepaw was deeply troubled that the Clans could forget such an important part of their history[24] and was escatic upon their successful rescue of Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr, who had been kept in captivity by Twolegs.[25]
