| "We Clan cats were just as surprised to meet you. I'd been having visions for some time, and I had no idea what they meant. But meeting you this way...the visions make sense, and I understand now what we have to do. We owe your kind a debt because you helped Galestar and her kits, so I'm glad that we can pay the debt by helping you now. Thank you, StarClan, for bringing us together!" |
| — Whistlepaw to the wildcats in Ivypool's Heart, pages 257-258 |
Whistlebreeze is a lithe, wiry,[6] and small[7] gray tabby she-cat[1] with amber eyes.[8]
Whistlebreeze is a WindClan medicine cat under Harestar's leadership in the lake territories. She was born to Featherpelt and Oatclaw as Whistlekit alongside her littermates, Flutterkit and Songkit. After becoming a warrior apprentice, Whistlepaw originally trained under Hootwhisker. However, after helping Kestrelflight in the medicine den and learning her odd dreams were from StarClan, she began training with him as a medicine cat. During her apprenticeship, Whistlepaw discovered Frostpaw injured on the moor after Splashtail's attempt to murder her. She cared for Frostpaw's wounds in secret and brought her to Smoky's barn where her life was saved by a Twoleg healer. Whistlepaw was confined to camp for faking Frostpaw's death and was severely wounded attempting to save her little sister, Leafkit, when a tree fell into WindClan's nursery.
Soon after, she received a dream not from StarClan of mewling kits suffering in a storm, requiring the Clans to pay an unknown debt. Her dream prompted the Clans to send Whistlepaw, Icewing, Dovewing, Ivypool, and Rootspring to investigate. Despite nearly being kidnapped by Twolegs on the way, Whistlepaw successfully discovered the wildcats and helped save Tumble Leap, Stalk Purr, and their kits from captivity, reuniting them with their remaining kin. After returning to the Clans, Whistlepaw and Frostpaw received their medicine cat names together, with Whistlepaw becoming Whistlebreeze.

The Silent Thaw[]
- Whistlepaw is now an apprentice with Hootwhisker as her mentor.
Darkness Within[]
- "I've been thinking about taking on an apprentice. Whistlepaw seems interested in herbs. [She's] been helping me take care of Emberfoot. [She] appears to have the right kind of instincts."
- ―Kestrelflight about training Whistlepaw Darkness Within, page 187
A Light in the Mist[]
- After the Clans' connection with StarClan is restored, Kestrelflight announces that are more reasons to celebrate, as StarClan has approved of his choice to train Whistlepaw and has said she will become a fine medicine cat in time.
In the A Starless Clan arc[]
River[]
- Whistlepaw: "It'll be good to have another apprentice here. I've only been training for a few moons. I started out as a warrior apprentice."
- Frostpaw: "You didn't know you were chosen by StarClan?"
- River, pages 29-30
- Mothwing introduces her new apprentice, Frostpaw, to Kestrelflight and Whistlepaw. Whistlepaw is delighted that there is a new apprentice to speak with, explaining how she recently started her training and how she used to be a warrior apprentice. Whistlepaw explains how she used to help Kestrelflight in his den until he asked if she wanted to be his apprentice. Barkface, Kestrelflight's mentor, has already taught her many times from StarClan. Frostpaw thinks that Whistlepaw is nice, and Whistlepaw shows her how to communicate with StarClan by touching the Moonpool. At the next Moonpool meeting, Whistlepaw excitedly greets Frostpaw.
Sky[]
- The medicine cats meet at the Moonpool for an emergency meeting to discuss the catmint shortage. They decide to send a joint-Clan patrol with Alderheart, Fidgetflake, and Puddleshine since Mothwing and Kestrelflight have apprentices and they would be too inexperienced to be left alone.
Shadow[]
- «But then Frostpaw reminded herself that she had no choice. She needed help, and the only cat who could give it to her was Whistlepaw.»
- —Frostpaw convincing herself to find Whistlepaw Shadow, page 275
Thunder[]
- Whistlepaw: "How are you feeling? [...] I need to get you somewhere warm where you can heal. I'm not sure if the herbs I've given you are enough. Are you sure you won't let me take you back to the medicine den? I promise you'll be safe there."
- Frostpaw: "No. It's too dangerous."
- Thunder, pages 9-10
- Whistlepaw discovers Frostpaw severely wounded on WindClan territory and provides aid to her injuries. Honoring Frostpaw's request for secrecy, Whistlepaw brings Frostpaw to the horseplace where Smoky lives. There, she teaches his kits, Little Daisy and Coriander, how to make a poultice to treat Frostpaw's wound. To protect Frostpaw's safety, Whistlepaw stages Frostpaw's death by placing blood and some of Frostpaw's fur where she found her, deceiving her Clan by informing them of Frostpaw's demise.
Wind[]
- "No! No, I can't! I have to rescue Leafkit. She's my sister!"
- ―Whistlepaw risking herself to save Leafkit Wind, page 232
- After a tree falls on WindClan's camp, Whistlepaw desperately tries to save Leafkit. Frostpaw convinces her to come out so that they can figure out how to save the kit, and with help, Whistlepaw struggles back out, injured. Kestrelflight takes her to the medicine den. When Leafkit is rescued, Sunbeam and Nightheart go to see Whistlepaw, who is badly injured. Frostpaw helps care for her, telling her that she is fortunate to have survived and apologizing for involving her in her troubles. Kestrelflight returns and apologizes to both apprentices, before sending Frostpaw away.
Star[]
- Whistlebreeze: "It was the Twoleg who saved you, not me."
- Frostpaw: "I would have died on the moor if not for you. If I had, who knows what would have become of RiverClan. [...] I know I got you into trouble, but I'm grateful to you for taking the risk."
- Star, page 308
- Cloverfoot informs Sunbeam of Whistlepaw's vision when she arrives to speak to Tigerstar. At the next Gathering, Harestar reports that WindClan miss Whistlepaw and questions if the medicine cats have heard any news about her. After Whistlepaw returns, she travels to the Moonpool to receive her medicine cat name and rushes to meet Frostpaw, asking if her wound still hurts. Whistlepaw receives the name Whistlebreeze and Frostpaw assures her that she will be a great medicine cat, remarking that she already saved her life. However, Whistlebreeze believes it was the Twoleg healer who saved Frostpaw. Kestrelflight agrees that without Whistlebreeze, the Clans may never have doubted Splashtail, but adds that he wished she had told him when Frostpaw was hurt. Frostpaw defends her and Whistlebreeze says she was glad she made the risk. As Frostpaw's ceremony is about to begin, Mothwing praises Whistlebreeze and Frostpaw as exceptional cats who exceeded all expectations.

In the Super Editions[]
Ivypool's Heart[]
- "I know you can! You're cats, after all. You're built for this. Remember who you are. Your ancestors believed you could do it. They wouldn't have summoned us Clan cats from so far away if they didn't know that you could help free yourselves."
- ―Whistlepaw encouraging Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap to escape Ivypool's Heart, pages 247-248
- After Kestrelflight calls for an emergency medicine cat meeting at the Moonpool to discuss Whistlepaw's dream, the Clan leaders meet at the island. Whistlepaw sketches out the symbol she saw in her dream: a cloud with lightning surrounded by vines. Compelled by StarClan's vague familiarity with the symbol, the Clan leaders agree to send a patrol with a cat from each Clan to the fox-headed mountain Whistlepaw saw in her dream. Ivypool, Dovewing, abd Rootspring volunteer to join Whistlepaw. Icewing from RiverClan later meets up with them on their journey.
- The patrol meets Beach and Slate, who agree to guide them to the Sisters for directions. While passing a barn, dogs attack but the cats manage to escape. At the Sisters' camp, Snow provides directions to the fox-headed mountain. The cats are awoken by construction work in an apple orchard and Whistlepaw is nearly hit by a monster, but Ivypool rescues her. Soon after, Whistlepaw has a dream urging them to follow a white feather, which they eventually find on a Twoleg sign. While following the gulls to the sun-drown-place, the cats camp at a lake where Whistlepaw is taken by a Twoleg kit and locked in a monster before the others free her.
- Whistlepaw recognizes the sun-drown-place from her dreams and they are confronted by a loner named Jake, who warns them about crabs before leaving. When they are attacked by a flock of gulls, the cats hide in a cliff amongst the cracks but are forced to flee when the tide rises. They discover a giant Twoleg nest that smells of strange animals and a large dirtplace. Whistlepaw believes the place feels familiar, and the cats explore it the following morning. They find strange animals in cages and are able to speak to two large tabbies with bushy, blunt-tipped tails, Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr, who are wildcats separated from their kind. They recognize Whistlepaw's drawing as the symbol for StormClan, the ancestors for their group. Stalk Purr tells them of the Star Tree, a place where their elders communicated with their ancestors.
- The Clan cats set out to find the Star Tree and they eventually find a burned tree in a clearing. Whistlepaw, Ivypool, Rootspring, and Icewing climb inside and end up in the ancestors' eternal hunting grounds. A Clan cat named Galestar greets them, having sent Whistlepaw the dream that prompted this mission. Galestar reveals she is the mother of the kits in Whistlepaw's dream, explaining the history of the forgotten StormClan, and urges the Clan cats to reunite Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap's litter with the remaining wildcats. They return to the Twoleg den and rescue Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap by releasing all the animals from their cages.
- Following Galestar's directions, the patrol heads back to the sun-drown-place to find a trail leading through the mountains to a lush woodland on the other side. Stalk Purr gives birth three kits and Whistlepaw helps to resuscitate the final kit, Pounce. The Clan cats experience a shared dream of devastation to RiverClan's camp, urging them to finish their mission quickly. Whistlepaw stays behind to tend to Stalk Purr and her kits while Ivypool and Icewing seek out the other wildcats. After the wildcats rejoin their kin and Galestar returns the memory of StormClan to StarClan, Whistlepaw's patrol returns to the Clans.

Personality and traits[]
- Whistlebreeze is a loyal, dedicated, friendly, and eager cat.[9] She is unusually humble, believing that her actions to save Frostpaw were nothing[10] and attributing her survival to the Twoleg healer.[11] Moreover, she rejects Galestar's praise of her wisdom and flexibility to accept strange new ideas.[12] Whistlebreeze shows great sympathy for others, such as when Sunbeam is caught trespassing.[13] Likewise, Ivypool believes Whistlebreeze's sympathy for the wildcats to be more than a medicine cat would normally feel for an injured cat or a queen near to kitting.[14] Additionally, she is a poor liar[15] and reluctant to deceive others even for moral ends.[16] She showed great bravery in her willingness to help Frostpaw[17] and her attempted rescue of Leafkit despite injury to herself.[18]
Relationships[]
Frostdawn[]
- "It is safe to tell me. I'll do whatever I can to protect you."
- ―Whistlepaw consoling Frostpaw Thunder, page 41
Frostdawn is Whistlebreeze's fellow medicine cat and a dear friend.
- Frostdawn is Whistlebreeze's fellow medicine cat who was the sole apprentice alongside her and with whom she received her medicine cat name. While Frostpaw initially felt shy around the older apprentice, she was relieved not to be the only trainee. Frostpaw was impressed by Whistlepaw's connection to StarClan[19] and sought her out for advice when StarClan sent her a vision of Reedwhisker's murder, believing Whistlepaw would keep it a secret.[20] Frostpaw could not wait to see her friend, but she was attacked before she could reach her.[21] Whistlepaw honored Frostpaw's desire to be kept secret and risked punishment by taking herbs from the medicine den,[22] bringing Frostpaw to the horseplace,[17] and following Frostpaw's plan to convince WindClan that a predator took her.[16]
- Whistlepaw promised she would to whatever she could to protect her, allowing Frostpaw to confide in her about the vision and who might have attacked her. Yet, Frostpaw feared she could not rely on Whistlepaw not to blurt out the truth,[17] and Whistlepaw admitted that, being a bad liar, she would not be able to take Frostpaw to the Moonpool.[15] Moreover, Whistlepaw was reluctant to speak out at the Gathering to present her false evidence of Frostpaw's death.[16] However, when Frostpaw revealed herself to the Clans, Whistlepaw immediately stood up for her, scared but resolute.[23]
- When Whistlepaw was trapped by a tree that fell into WindClan's nursery in her attempt to rescue Leafkit, Frostpaw soothed and helped to free her.[18] While caring for Whistlepaw's wounds, Frostpaw apologized for getting her into trouble, but Whistlepaw assured Frostpaw that everything was worth it.[10] Frostpaw was proud when Whistlebreeze received her full name and assured her friend that, having already saved her own life, she would be a great medicine cat.[11]
Kestrelflight[]
- "If today's disaster has taught us anything, it's that nothing is certain—not even things that seem undeniable. There's more to the story of how and why you helped Frostpaw than I understood. And, there's more to [Frostpaw] than I chose to believe. I am sorry."
- ―Kestrelflight apologizing to Whistlepaw Wind, page 239
Kestrelflight was Whistlebreeze's mentor, but he was angry with her for breaking his trust.
- Kestrelflight identified Whistlebreeze's potential as a medicine cat and was proud to serve as her mentor; however, his trust in her faultered when Whistlepaw deceived him about Frostpaw. He initially offered to train Whistlepaw after she helped treating sick cats,[19] and when other medicine-cats questioned this move given StarClan's absence, Kestrelflight fiercely defended choosing Whistlepaw.[24] Still, he waited to officially apprentice her until StarClan approved, his eyes shining when StarClan agreed she would make a fine medicine-cat.[25]
- Whistlepaw's first instinct was to fetch Kestrelflight upon finding Frostpaw deathly injured on the moor.[22] As Whistlepaw feared,[17] Kestrelflight began to notice her slipping away from camp, but she hid the truth[15] and led her mentor to believe Frostpaw had been killed by a predator. Kestrelflight was eager for Whistlepaw to share this with the other Clans[16] and was aghast when Whistlepaw admittted the truth, his eyes promising a reckoning.[23] Kestrelflight struggled to forgive Whistlepaw, who feared he would stop training her altogether.[13] Yet, when Whistlepaw was gravely injured in her attempt to save Leafkit, Kestrelflight was horrified and struggled to keep his voice steady in the medicine-den.[18] Finally, he made amends with Whistlepaw[10] and proudly promoted her to a full medicine-cat.[11]
Leafcurl[]
- Frostpaw: "You're lucky to be alive. You pushed yourself hard to save your siblings. It was a noble act, but you have to think of your own safety, too."
- Whistlepaw: "I know. But I could not have lived with myself if Leafkit had been hurt. My parents would have been devastated—not to mention, those kits are WindClan's future."
- Wind, page 238
- Leafcurl is Whistlebreeze's younger sister whom she risked her life to save after a tree fell into WindClan's nursery. Whistlepaw bore great injury to herself while pushing through the tangled branches to reach Leafkit, only relenting after Frostpaw promised that the others would work out a way to get to her.[18] Whistlepaw explained to Frostpaw that she acted so rashly because Leafkit's death would devastate their parents and harm WindClan's future.[10]
Galestar[]
- Galestar: "You're very wise, for such a young cat. That's why I sent the vision to you. You're flexible enough to consider strange new ideas, more so than Kestrelflight."
- Whistlepaw: "I'm only a medicine-cat apprentice."
- Ivypool's Heart, page 227
Galestar believed Whistlepaw could help repay the Clan's debt to the wildcats.
- Galestar was a forgotten leader of WindClan and StormClan who hoped that by contacting the Clans, they could repay their debt to the wildcats who saved her. Importantly, she chose to contact Whistlepaw because of her willingness to consider strange new ideas, hoping to rouse her curiousity with the StormClan symbol. However, Galestar did not expect Whistlepaw's visions to show her the storm in which she and her kits were separated from StormClan.[12] Initially, Whistlepaw felt dejected by her visions, beliving the cat who sent the visions was just as vague as StarClan.[26] After meeting Galestar by traveling through the Star Tree, Whistlepaw sympathyzed with her abandonment by Stripestar and pledged not to let Galestar down.[12] Whistlepaw was deeply troubled that the Clans could forget such an important part of their history[27] and was escatic upon their successful rescue of Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr, who had been kept in captivity by Twolegs.[28]

Quotes[]
- Frostpaw: "You're a brave cat. I never had the chance to apologize to you for all the trouble you got into with your Clan. It was all because you wanted to help me, and I can never thank you enough for what you did."
- Whistlepaw: "It was nothing."
- Wind, pages 238-239
- "[...] I always knew some Twolegs could be dangerous, but until now I never imagined any of them could be so cruel, even if they don't understand how Clan cats want to live. I never thought a Twoleg would torture animals. [...] I'm sure these cats have something to do with my vision. And that means they're important to the Clans. If it wasn't StarClan who sent us on this quest, maybe it was the wildcats' ancestors. Maybe we've been sent here to help the wildcats."
- ―Whistlepaw about the wildcats Ivypool's Heart, pages 200-201
- Icewing: "It was a true dream. It was clear enough. ‘Too late,' Frostpaw said. There is no more RiverClan."
- Whistlepaw: "Icewing, I'm not sure about that. Why would StarClan send us a dream if all it told us was to give up hope? StarClan's dreams are meant to guide us."
- Ivypool's Heart, pages 288-289
