Whitestep is a ThunderClan warrior. She and her mate Rosebush join StormClan when ThunderClan and WindClan merge. After StormClan leaves the forest in search of a new home, Whitestep grows concerned for her mate after he sustains a paw injury while crossing a Thunderpath. While crossing the mountains, Rosebush falls down a chasm while attempting to jump a gap, and Whitestep yowls when she fails to catch his scruff. Nettlesting and Hazelfrond haul her away from the gap before Whitestep could fall off. Whitestep whimpers with grief when StormClan rests for the night. Moons later in greenleaf, Stripestar hunts with Swiftwing, Whitestep, and Palepaw at their latest camp at the top of the fox-head mountain, and they successfully catch a hawk. After Rainkit's death two moons later, Whitestep is among one of the cats who attempts to convince Galestar and Stripestar that they should return to the forest. Eventually, Galestar realizes that Whitestep and the others are right, and she and Stripestar agree to head back to the forest.

After StormClan loses Galestar and her three kits in a storm, Whitestep and the other StormClan cats argue with Stripestar that his dream of creating StormClan is a fruitless endeavor, and they wish to return to their own Clans. However, Whitestep softens her tone, lamenting that she has also lost her mate during their journey. However, she does not blame Stripestar for Rosebush's death. Whitestep still has faith in Stripestar to lead them back to the forest and hopes that he will remain in ThunderClan after StarClan has decided their fate. Whitestep and the other ThunderClan cats visit the Moonstone so Stripestar can ask StarClan for forgiveness. While Thunderstar demotes Stripestar back to his warrior name, he appoints Whitestep as his successor so ThunderClan can have a fresh start. Stripebark and the rest of his Clanmates listen to Whitestep's leadership ceremony while she rests at the Moonstone. Thunderstar grants her a life for fealty towards ThunderClan. Riverstar gives her a life for good judgment while Cloud Spots grants her the willingness to fight for others. Gray Wing bestows Whitestep the gift of bringing out the best of her warriors, while Turtle Tail appears to give her determination to adhere to the blazing star prophecy. Kestrelwing bestows her the ability to make mistakes, and Rosebush arrives with the gift of courage. Finally, Fogdrift gives her former Clanmate a gift for hope for the future, and Rainkit's gift is for loyalty. Whitestep is renamed Whitestar, the new leader of ThunderClan.

Outside Highstones, Whitestar rallies her warriors to prepare for battle to reclaim their territory from RiverClan. She appoints Tumbletail as her deputy. When Stripebark lingers behind, Whitestar beckons him to ThunderClan. Seasons later, Stripestar and the other ThunderClan warriors celebrate their victory at Sunningrocks after Whitestar has reclaimed nearly all of their lost territory.
