Chapter description[]
- Nightheart is on the dawn patrol with Waffle. Waffle is adjusting well to Clan life, and seems more relaxed and at home in ThunderClan. Wasp, however, still longs for RiverClan and isn't embracing ThunderClan life as well. Nightheart teaches Waffle how to make a scent marker, and the young tom does so. Waffle notices that Nightheart seems stressed, and the warrior confesses that Sunbeam is missing. Waffle is surprised and feels sorry. Nightheart tells the park cat that Sunbeam was sneaking herbs to Berryheart but hasn't returned. He wants to look for his mate. Waffle sympathizes, saying that being a warrior seems hard, and that in the Park, no one told any cat where they could or could not go. Nightheart points out that it isn't entirely true, as some places are dangerous with hostile cats or other animals. Waffle agrees. Nightheart tells Waffle that they just have to go to the WindClan border, which he can see, and then the patrol is done. Waffle hopes that Sunbeam returns when they are done, and Nightheart says that he does too.
- At the border, Nightheart and Waffle are greeted by Crowfeather, who asks to be escorted to camp. The WindClan deputy says that he needs to return something that got lost, and reveals Sunbeam. Nightheart leads his and Crowfeather's patrol to camp. There, Crowfeather greets Squirrelstar and tells her that Sunbeam was caught trespassing. Squirrelstar assures the deputy that Sunbeam will be punished, and Nightheart hopes that she won't be too harsh. Crowfeather says his goodbyes and leaves. Squirrelstar asks Nightheart to find Bayshine. The leader asks Bayshine and Sunbeam what happened the night before, but is interrupted by Tigerstar.
- The ShadowClan leader demands to speak with Squirrelstar about an urgent matter. Squirrelstar says that she is busy with Clan matters, but Tigerstar says that it cannot wait, and that he had already been kicked out of SkyClan. Squirrelstar dismisses her warriors and asks Nightheart to gather the medicine cats and head to a private part of camp. In the meeting, Tigerstar talks about how Frostpaw and Puddleshine went to the Moonpool and saw Splashtail and Podlight. The false leader had only pretended to get nine lives. Then, Riverstar had appeared, and while Frostpaw and Puddleshine could see him, Splashtail and Podlight could not. Tigerstar says that ThunderClan and ShadowClan should intervene. Squirrelstar disagrees, not wanting to spill any Clan's blood, and citing that the new warrior code makes it clear that the deposition of any leader must start in their own Clan. Nightheart protests, saying that Splashtail already has disproven himself as leader by killing Reedwhisker, Curlfeather, and attempting to kill Frostpaw, and that his ambitions may not stop at just RiverClan. Jayfeather agrees, saying that cats like him can cause long-lasting damage to the Clans. The senior medicine cat also alerts Squirrelstar of the park cats eavesdropping on the meeting.
- Squirrelstar challenges Waffle and Wasp. Waffle says that he heard the gathered cats talkig about Frostpaw, and that he believes that she is not a liar. Wasp agrees, saying that Riverstar himself is asking for help through her. Squirrelstar thinks for a moment, and turns to Tigerstar. She says that if Leafstar refuses to listen to any of this, then they need Harestar to be persuaded, saying if Splashtail has convinced SkyClan to ally with him, then they need all the strength they can get. Tigerstar says that he will be on his way to WindClan, and says goodbye. Squirrelstar does too, not without telling off the visitors for eavesdropping. Nightheart asks Squirrelstar what may happen if WindClan joins the cause, and Squirrelstar says that she doesn't know. She then asks Nightheart to bring Sunbeam to her.
