Chapter description[]

Sunbeam waits for Squirrelstar and Tigerstar to finish talking, dreading what her leader will say about being caught by WindClan. When the conversation ends, Nightheart tells his mate that Squirrelstar would like to speak. Sunbeam is relieved that the can get the conversation over with, and Nightheart asks her if she saw her family. Anxious, Sunbeam replies that Berryheart is getting worse, and is not interested in Clan medicine, and that Sparrowtail is sneaking the herbs into her food. She then says that she made a plan for Sparrowtail to bring Berryheart to ThunderClan if she does not get better. Nightheart thinks that the plan may work.
The pair meets Squirrelstar, and Nightheart is dismissed. The leader growls, asking Sunbeam whether she made it clear that she was not to be caught in WindClan territory. Sunbeam says that Squirrelstar was very clear. Squirrelstar continues, saying that although she is sympathetic about Sunbeam's situation, she still needs to punish the warrior. Sunbeam understands. Squirrelstar says that when she gives an order, she expects it to be followed. Sunbeam apologizes. Softer, Squirrelstar asks how Sunbeam's family is doing. Sunbeam replies that Berryheart was hurt by Twoleg stuff, and that she is infected. She has an urge to reveal her and Sparrowtail's plan, but decides not to. Squirrelstar empathizes, but does tell Sunbeam that the is restricted to doing only apprentice duties while being confined to camp. Sunbeam dips her head and walks away, worrying about not being able to meet her father.
Later, Sunbeam is helping the medicine cats tend to the elders. It is her third day of punishment, and Alderheart says that she is doing well, and should have her punishment end soon. Sunbeam sighs, and remembers that this is the day where she is meant to meet Sparrowtail at the Thunderpath. She worries that if she does not go, then Sparrowtail will think that she does not care for her kin anymore. Sunbeam considers telling Squirrelstar about the plan and asking permission to go, but also contemplates sneaking out. She decides to ask Nightheart for advice when he returns from a hunting patrol. She tells her mate that she hoped that Squirrelstar would have ended her punishment, and that she needs to meet Sparrowtail that night, asking Nightheart if he could do so in her place. Nightheart worries that doing anything to anger WindClan may jeopardize the chance of them allying against Splashtail, but agrees to do so anyways. Sunbeam thanks her mate, and goes to do her task for the elders.
After tending to the queens, kits, and elders, Sunbeam returns to the medicine den. Jayfeather asks her to sort herbs for him. Sunbeam is not familiar with herbs, and is scattered due to concern for Berryheart and Nightheart, and does so incorrectly. Jayfeather snaps that she should leave until she can concentrate. Sunbeam apologizes and takes a break, when she sees Nightheart alone. She asks if Berryheart is dead, and Nightheart says that she is not. Nightheart did meet Sparrowtail at the Thunderpath, but Sparrowtail must have turned away upon seeing a ThunderClan cat that was not Sunbeam. He blames himself. Sunbeam says that Sparrowtail would not turn down help like that, but Berryheart would. She hopes that Nightheart's interpretation of events is correct, and that Berryheart is not dead.
