"I am a true leader. And you and the other leaders would do well to note who it is that speaks against me: a disgraced RiverClan exile, and the medicine cat from the Clan who invaded my Clan and tried to take us over! There's no doubt in my mind that the more upheaval he can cause in RiverClan, the better Tigerstar will like it. I am Splashstar, and unless you leaders know otherwise, you had better treat me with the respect my new name deserves. After all, what is the point of these Gatherings if the leaders can't even agree on who holds a rightful place in their Clan as leader or medicine cat?"

Chapter description[]

On the way to the Gathering, Frostpaw reflects how Tigerstar had only managed to convince Squirrelstar to support his belief that Splashtail could not lead RiverClan. She worries about her Clan's future though remembers how Mothwing mentioned that not every RiverClan cat supported Splashtail. Once the Gathering begins, Podlight announces Splashtail as Splashstar, claiming the young tom had received his nine lives. Both Frostpaw and Tigerstar refute his lies, and Puddleshine explains how he saw both Podlight and Splashtail ridicule the ceremony at the Moonpool. However, Splashtail asserts his authority as RiverClan's leader, convincing both Harestar and Leafstar in his legitimacy.
Splashtail also announces Harelight as his new deputy as well as the birth of his mother's newest litter: Floatkit, Rapidkit, and Troutkit. With Harestar also siding with RiverClan's decision to choose their own leader, Tigerstar declares that the RiverClan issue is settled unless it threatens the other Clans. Harestar also declares the birth of Featherpelt's newest litter of kitsGrasskit, Leafkit, and [[Branchleap|—and informs Tigerstar that WindClan's warriors have spotted Berryheart and her kin appearing ill nearby. Squirrelstar calls Wasp and Waffle forward about their decision after one moon of staying with ThunderClan. While Wasp decides to return to the Cats of the Park, Waffle wishes to become a ThunderClan apprentice. Tigerstar then calls for the Gathering to end.
As Frostpaw follows the ShadowClan cats back to their camp, she notices shadowy figures following her. Worried that Splashtail might be coming after her again, Frostpaw calls for help but realizes it is only Duskfur and Icewing. The two RiverClan she-cats inform Frostpaw that they believe her and are working to recruit more cats to side against Splashtail. Tigerstar returns for Frostpaw and warns Icewing and Duskfur to be careful. That night, Frostpaw dreams of lightning striking the river into two and a storm tearing up the moor followed by kits screaming for help. She wakes up in a fright, realizing that WindClan is in trouble.
