Chapter description[]
- Frostpaw returns to the RiverClan camp to see Harelight approaching Splashtail's stump as the training halts. He suggests that they are being too harsh on the cats who left and that they should communicate with them. When Splashtail hesitates, Harelight questions his own boldness, to which Splashtail says that he is only doing a deputy's job. Harelight says that a strong leader knows how to use criticism to improve himself, but Splashtail cuts him off and states that Harelight understands what RiverClan was like after Leopardstar's death: peaceful and lazy. He leaps at Harelight and slashes his throat, reminding Frostpaw of his attempt to kill her, and Nightheart stops her from interfering as Harelight dies.
- Splashtail fails to notice his Clanmates' grief and declares that RiverClan will no longer listen to StarClan, but will do what they must to become strong, frightening them. He expresses the need for a deputy who understands what RiverClan should be and declares Berryheart his new deputy. The cats are shocked, and Frostpaw notices Splashtail's failure to use the proper words. Berryheart is unsurprised, causing Frostpaw to realize that this was planned, which distresses Sunbeam. Berryheart accepts her new position, and RiverClan welcomes her fearfully, while Frostpaw tells Nightheart and Sunbeam that they need to find Mothwing, Duskfur, and Icewing to protect them. She silently hopes that she has the strength to fight for RiverClan's survival.
