Chapter description[]

Sunbeam is hunting a squirrel near the WindClan border. It almost escapes, but she manages to catch it in the end. Nightheart compliments her catch, and Sunbeam thanks StarClan for the prey. The two mates talk about how well they work together, and how happy they are to be back together. Sunbeam buries the squirrel alongside the rest of the prey that she and Nightheart had caught. She catches her eye on a starling in the pile, which reminds her of Berryheart. When Nightheart notices her concern, Sunbeam admits to him that she misses Berryheart and worries for her mother's safety after she left ShadowClan. Nightheart is surprised that Berryheart left ShadowClan, and Sunbeam explains how her mother had tried to depose Tigerstar. Nightheart reassures Sunbeam that her kin must be doing well as they are strong. Sunbeam says how happy she is to be in ThunderClan, and Nightheart asks her about their future. They both agree on possibly having kits, but not in the immediate future.
The two mates are interrupted by Breezepelt, who is on patrol himself across the stream with Woodsong and Crouchfoot, who are laughing and expressing mock disgust. Sunbeam is embarrassed, and Nightheart cooly greets the WindClan cats. Breezepelt asks Nightheart his thoughts on the events of the Gathering. Nightheart says that he is worried, and Breezepelt agrees. Breezepelt says that Harestar and Kestrelflight are very angry at Whistlepaw for helping Frostpaw and lying about it, and that although Harestar has his doubts about Splashtail, he doesn't want to act unless there is proof that the RiverClan leader is a fraud.
Woodsong and Breezepelt then talk with Sunbeam about Berryheart. Breezepelt reveals that Berryheart has sheltered outside of WindClan's territory, and is severely injured. Sunbeam grows very concerned about her mother's health. Breezepelt makes an initially disheartening comment on whether ThunderClan cats are able to help their kin outside their territory, but Sunbeam realizes that it may have a second meaning, seeing how Breezepelt had a similar experience with his mother, Nightcloud. Sunbeam asserts to Breezepelt that her kin had made their choices, and that they could always ask for help, but knowing Berryheart, Sunbeam doubts they will. Breezepelt muses about parents being the worst, which Sunbeam knows is from experience with the warrior's relationship with Crowfeather.
The two patrols part ways, and as Nightheart and Sunbeam go back for their buried prey, Sunbeam tells Nightheart about how she masked the fact that she is upset about Berryheart's condition, and how she may not be able to do anything to help her parents who are suffering.
