Chapter description[]
- Frostpaw wakes up in the ShadowClan medicine den, initially not knowing where she is before remembering what had happened. She feels homesick for RiverClan. Shadowsight is sorting herbs and notices that Frostpaw is awake. He greets her and asks how she is feeling. Frostpaw admits her homesickness. Shadowsight empathizes and tells Frostpaw about when his Clan didn't believe him. This makes Frostpaw feel less alone. They then leave the den to share prey.
- Tigerstar calls a Clan meeting. He says that ever since Berryheart tried to depose him, he had been thinking of how to be a better leader for his Clan. Tigerstar asks his Clanmates if they have any criticism or concerns about his leadership. Frostpaw speaks up about the occupation of RiverClan, saying how it was harmful for both RiverClan and ShadowClan. Many ShadowClan warriors agree. Tigerstar admits that what he did was a mistake, but defends himself, saying that he had good intentions of keeping the Clan together. The ShadowClan cats are still doubtful. Tigerstar ends the meeting by once again saying that if any cat has concerns about his leadership, they can talk it out in camp, and adds that he will step down as leader if the Clan no longer sees him fit to lead.
- After the meeting, Tigerstar talks with Frostpaw. He tells her that she isn't a true ShadowClan member, and that his kindness is why she is there. He doesn't appreciate that Frostpaw called him out. Frostpaw replies, saying that she is grateful for Tigerstar's hospitality, but it won't make her hold her tongue from telling the truth. Tigerstar remarks that she has grown a lot from a timid apprentice. Frostpaw asks if she can go to RiverClan to spy. She wants to see if Splashtail has gone to the Moonpool to receive his nine lives. Tigerstar allows her, but says that if Frostpaw gets caught, she is on her own.
- Frostpaw thanks Tigerstar, and goes to her home territory. She hears yowls and screeches, and discovers that Splashtail is ordering his Clanmates to do harsh battle training. Splashtail humiliates and yells at cats who question the training or are not doing as well as he wants. He says that RiverClan needs to be prepared in case ShadowClan comes back, and to take their revenge; and vows to make RiverClan greater than it was under Mistystar. Duskfur says annoyedly that once Splashtail receives his lives, ShadowClan won't dare attack again. Splashtail snarls murderously, saying that just because RiverClan would have a leader doesn't mean that ShadowClan will stop attacking, and that StarClan's opinions don't matter, so he will be getting his lives on his own time. Frostpaw is shocked at Splashtail's disregard for his warrior ancestors, and how horrifying his leadership and its repercussions to the other Clans truly is.
- Mothwing catches Frostpaw and scolds her former apprentice. Frostpaw tells Mothwing the truth about Splashtail, and Mothwing believes her. Mothwing tells Frostpaw that she is feigning loyalty to Splashtail to keep him happy. Mothwing has been trying to speak with her Clanmates but has had to lie low to avoid suspicion or punishment. Although Mothwing is agnostic, she still believes that RiverClan needs a StarClan-appointed leader. Frostpaw asks if any other RiverClan cats doubt Splashtail, and Mothwing says that there are cats who uncertain about the new leader. Frostpaw tells Mothwing that she has to make Splashtail go to the Moonpool, but Mothwing says that she can't, and that he will go eventually, but the medicine cat doubts he actually will receive his lives. Frostpaw urges Mothwing to speak out more, but Mothwing says she can't. The two friends part ways with mutual dread about RiverClan's future.
