Chapter description[]

Sunbeam washes her paw after hiding the stolen herbs in the warriors' den. She looks around camp, trying to find a cat to help her. Ivypool is sharing prey with Sparkpelt and Finchlight, and Bayshine is pretending to be a badger for Spotfur's kits. Sunbeam scans the whole camp, but there is no sign of Nightheart. Soon, Squirrelstar and Nightheart appear, and the leader waits for Nightheart while he speaks with the park cats. Sunbeam is curious as to what is happening, but frustrated that Nightheart isn't with her. She understands, though, because this is Squirrelstar's orders. Bayshine greets Sunbeam as she pads towards the nursery. He tells Sunbeam about how the kits are fierce warriors, and Bristlekit demonstrates this by showing off her claws. Sunbeam feigns fear, much to the kits' amusement. Spotfur calls her kits for a nap, and they obey, but not before Graykit and Stemkit tell the "badger" to go away.
Bayshine complains that he aches all over from the playfight, saying that the kits will be ready to become apprentices soon. He asks Sunbeam if there is anything he can do. Sunbeam tells Bayshine that she stole herbs from the medicine den, and wants to give them to Berryheart. Bayshine offers to help, and Sunbeam is grateful. They leave the camp, with Bayshine covering Sunbeam by walking close to her. They manage to evade every cat, including Twigbranch, who is on guard that day. Once out of camp, Sunbeam thanks Bayshine for his help, and Bayshine says that he will go hunting to help the cover. Sunbeam leaves towards WindClan territory to start the journey.
Sunbeam goes along the border, a few tail-lengths away to avoid suspicion. She keeps her eyes and ears open for any WindClan patrols, hoping to not have her scent detected. She finally reaches the Thunderpath and took the route towards Berryheart. Sunbeam is startled by a monster, almost suffering the same fate as Berryheart. She picks up the herbs that were scattered, and goes to the hollow to treat her kin.
In the hollow, Sunbeam sees her mother. Berryheart is worse than the last time Sunbeam had seen her, shallowly breathing and very weak. Sunbeam gives Berryheart the herbs, but Berryheart rejects them, saying that she cannot accept Clan herbs. Sunbeam goes hunting with Sparrowtail, who promises to sneak the herbs into his mate's food. Sunbeam insists to her father that Berryheart needs a medicine cat, and he agrees. Sparrowtail says that he and Hollowspring have a plan in case Berryheart refuses a medicine cat. They want to bring her to ThunderClan. Sparrowtail asks Sunbeam if she can meet him at the Thunderpath in three days, and Sunbeam says yes. She has doubts about how risky this is, but decided to accept because Berryheart is still her kin, and ThunderClan would not want to refuse an ill cat.
Sunbeam returns home, deciding to risk cutting through WindClan territory so that she can be home quicker. She tracks for WindClan cats, knowing that she is too far from the lake to claim immunity. She is about to go into the neutral zone when she is caught by a WindClan patrol, consisting of Crowfeather, Appleshine, and Hootwhisker. Sunbeam hopes that they will pass by like the last patrol did, but this patrol does not. Crowfeather confronts Sunbeam, telling her that she is a long way from ThunderClan. Sunbeam tries to explain to Crowfeather why she is on his land, but is cut off by Appleshine. Sunbeam insists that she isn't there to steal prey, and to her surprise, Crowfeather agrees. The WindClan deputy says that Sunbeam is an honorable cat, and that she must be trying to help her kin. Sunbeam confirms this. Crowfeather insists that Sunbeam must be taken back to camp. He tells his patrol to go on without him, and takes Sunbeam to the WindClan camp.
In camp, Sunbeam feels miserable, thinking that her troubles keep getting worse, and fearing what her new Clan will think. She is greeted by Whistlepaw, who asks if she needs help. Sunbeam feels better because of Whistlepaw's friendliness. Sunbeam tells Whistlepaw that she is in trouble for trespassing, and the medicine cat apprentice tells her not to worry about Harestar. Sunbeam says that she is more worried about Squirrelstar. Whistlepaw sympathizes, saying that she is punished as well, and isn't allowed to leave camp until Kestrelflight says that she can. Crowfeather emerges from Harestar's den, summoning Sunbeam. Sunbeam goes into the den, and Harestar sternly greets her, saying that trespassing is against the warrior code. Sunbeam says she knows, and that she was just trying to help her kin. She says that she cut through WindClan's territory to get home before dark. Harestar says that this won't work out well, and makes Sunbeam spend the night in WindClan's camp before being escorted back home. She leaves the den, and Crowfeather helps her find a place to sleep. Sunbeam thinks that she won't be able to sleep because of her worries for her Clanmates.
