"It's going to work. Frostpaw is a good kit, and I understand how she thinks. Mistystar will want her medicine cats' advice for who her new, final deputy should be, and that advice will be whoever I think it should be."

Chapter description[]

Splashtail and Curlfeather meet in a clearing far away from the camp to discuss and start their plan. The two start pondering about what to do, and Splashtail starts to become increasingly excited. He reflects on how he and Curlfeather had decided to work together; she had suggested that maybe StarClan was not always right and how only new changes could prevent a cat like Ashfur from rising to power again. Curlfeather reveals that Splashtail will kill Reedwhisker, and he is shocked. Curlfeather pushes the importance of making it look like an accident and having no suspicion on her. Splashtail is hesitant, but Curlfeather prompts that he must do this to get what he wants. He argues that he is the cat taking all the risks here, and fears that Reedwhisker may kill him.
Curlfeather soothes that Splashtail will be able to surprise Reedwhisker. Splashtail questions why she is so confident that Mistystar will choose her as deputy. Curlfeather assures that she is the obvious choice, and that her kit will help her. She explains how she tricked Frostpaw into believing she was chosen to be a medicine cat, and how that will help sway Mistystar. She prompts that it will not fail, and how easy it will be to make Splashtail deputy once she is leader, and then change will come. Splashtail voices his concerns on how the plan is dependent on their ancestors. Curlfeather agrees, but warns him to not share that with RiverClan. He pushes on, commenting how StarClan did not help them in troubled times. She reminds Splashtail of how StarClan killed her mate, Jayclaw. Curlfeather concludes that the rules will change soon, but that this plan will fail if Splashtail does not keep quiet.
Splashtail brings up his concerns about being killed, and Curlfeather snaps that he just needs to be careful and wait. He muses about having to wait nine lifetimes, and decides that when he is leader, he will not turn to StarClan for help. Curlfeather starts on how to kill Reedwhisker, reminding him to make it look like an accident. She leaves, and Splashtail dwells on the plan. He resolves that Curlfeather depends too much on StarClan and that under her, not much will change. Splashtail decides she will not become leader.
