Below contains in-depth information for chapter ten of Yellowfang's Secret. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Yellowfang storms out of the medicineden and brushes past Rowanberry, who asks if she is all right. Yellowfang does not reply, not wanting to talk to anyone. However, Brightflower intercepts her, asking if she is okay, to which Yellowfang mutters that Sagewhisker fixed everything. Brightflower continues to fret over her, saying that Stonetooth will not want her to go out on patrol out the battle. Rowanberry follows Yellowfang as she runs out of camp, admitting she is worried about her littermate. As Yellowfang is about to tell Rowanberry what Sagewhisker told her about feeling other cats' pain, she feels pain again, and realizes one of Rowanberry's claws is bent backwards, and the she-cat confirms she hurt it in the battle. Yellowfang decides against telling her sister the truth, and instead just tells her to go see Sagewhisker. As soon as Rowanberry is gone, Yellowfang decides she will cope with her pains and that they will not stop her from being a warrior.
Later, Yellowfang hunts with Nutwhisker, Featherstorm, Blizzardwing, and Foxpaw, and the patrol discusses about the badger that has recently moved into their territory. Foxpaw claims she is not scared of the badger, but Blizzardwing scolds her gently. When the patrol gets back to camp, Toadskip and Nettlespot arrive with the rogues Red and Boulder. Nettlespot tells Cedarstar that they found them on their territory, and the leader demands if the two were spying. When Cedarstar asks why they came onto their territory, Red explains that she and Boulder wish to join ShadowClan. The Clan is distrustful of the idea, saying that they belong in the Twolegplace. Boulder excitedly replies that the forest is great, while Red states that she admires their actions in the battle. Cedarstar is hesitant, but Red retorts that they are not mere kittypets. After considering for a moment, Cedarstar relents that if Red and Boulder have proved their loyalty by staying for a moon, then they may become part of ShadowClan. He then instructs Brackenfoot to show them how to make nests for themselves. After the meeting, Stonetooth argues with Cedarstar about allowing the rogues into the Clan, debating about them being potential spies. Yellowfang then searches for Raggedpelt but finds Nutwhisker instead. The excited warrior disapproves of Cedarstar's decision to make the two rogues apprentices, but Yellowfang defends them. Nutwhisker is about to answer, but Archeye calls him away on a hunting patrol. While Nutwhisker races off, Yellowfang looks at Raggedpelt and wishes that she knew what he was thinking.
At twilight, Red calls Yellowfang over. She recognizes the ShadowClan warrior during her trip to find Hal in the Twolegplace, and Red promises to keep it a secret. Red mentions that she and Boulder may want a few nighttime adventures once they have learned their way around. For a moment, Yellowfang feels suspicious, but then reminds herself that all Clan cats must have felt like that when they were young. Yellowfang realizes that they are too young to know about Featherstorm visiting the Twolegplace, so they will not know that Hal might be Raggedpelt's father. This relaxes her, so she chooses to join them to eat, but Yellowfang notices that Raggedpelt keeps nervously glancing at Red and Boulder. Yellowfang debates whether she should tell him that Red and Boulder will keep their secret, but then decides not to as he is still not talking to her.
The next morning, Cedarstar calls a Clan meeting. The leader reveals he intends to make Red and Boulder apprentices now. Red is nervous about the ceremony and asks Yellowfang to help her. Cedarstar then performs the ceremony, giving her the new name of Russetpaw and Featherstorm as her mentor. Cedarstar then performs the ceremony with Boulder, but the tom requests to keep his name. Cedarstar agrees and appoints Mousewing as Boulder's mentor. Stonetooth asks his leader again about Russetpaw and Boulder, protesting Boulder keeping his name. Cedarstar replies wearily that the deputy must recognize when battles are worth fighting. While the Clan drifts out of the clearing, Yellowfang spots Raggedpelt coming in her direction and hopefully wonders if he will finally speak to her again, but Raggedpelt walks past her without saying anything. Yellowfang mutters for him to suit himself and sighs, and wonders if winning his trust is a battle worth fighting, and if all the worries she has is worth it for Raggedpelt.
Red and Boulder are accepted into ShadowClan; Red gets the new name Russetpaw, while Boulder keeps his name.[11]
Ceremonies[]
Russetpaw's apprentice ceremony
Cedarstar:
Red, you have left your home in Twolegplace, and stated your wish to become a member of ShadowClan. From this time on you shall be known as Russetpaw.
Cedarstar:
Featherstorm, you are a skillful Clan cat with an excellent knowledge of the warrior code. I know that you will pass this knowledge onto your apprentice.
Boulder, you too have asked for a place in ShadowClan. From this time on you shall be known as-
Boulder:
Hang on.
Cedarstar:
What is it?
Boulder:
I like my name. Can I keep it?
Cedarstar:
Very well. From this time on you shall be known as Boulder. Mousewing, you shall be mentor to this new apprentice. I trust that you will teach him the skills and the behavior expected from a Clan cat.
