Chapter description[]

Brackenfoot calls for Yellowfang to watch for Russetpaw and Boulder's attacks. Yellowfang narrowly avoids their team collision and tries to knock Boulder off his feet. The she-cat applauds the two apprentices' developed skills. Rowanberry comments on the session, saying that warriors need to keep their fighting skills sharp and that the rogues won't bother them again. Yellowfang targets the apprentices again but realizes she is outmatched. Russetpaw and Boulder understand the basics of ShadowClan's fighting techniques, and Boulder pins the gray warrior on the ground. Brackenfoot compliments the tom while Foxpaw mocks Yellowfang's loss. The pale ginger tom offers her daughter a second chance to redeem herself. Yellowfang quickly lands a couple of blows on Russetpaw, and she pins her on the ground quickly. Brackenfoot dismisses the warrior, and she observes the rest of the session. Rowanberry compliments the two apprentices on their skills. She adds that their loner lives didn't make them soft. Yelowfang is shocked by her sister's comments but agrees they'll be useful to the Clan once they're properly trained. She watches Russetpaw pin Foxpaw onto the dirt, feeling a little gratification. Brackenfoot calls off the training session, and the group returns to camp.
Yellowfang notices Raggedpelt sneakily creeping through the forest, and she tells Brackenfoot that she needs to speak with him. The warrior agrees, and she leaves her Clanmates to try and make amends with him. While she runs through the forest, she admires the beauty of the woods. Her thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a badger. She follows the sound and finds Raggedpelt cornered by a giant badger into the thick clump of brambles. Yellowfang prepares to join the battle until she finds two badger cubs with their mother behind Raggedpelt. The badger strikes at Raggedpelt, and Yellowfang collapses at the feeling of Raggedpelt's pain. The gray she-cat reminds herself that this pain is his and not hers. The pain paralyzes her as she watches Raggedpelt defend himself from the beast. Finally, Yellowfang leaps on the badger's back and calls for Raggedpelt to flee. The badger quickly focuses its attention on her. Raggedpelt narrowly escapes and rejoins Yellowfang to help her. The she-cat warns the warrior to flee again until she notices the severity of his wounds. They quickly run away from the badger back to camp. Raggedpelt scolds Yellowfang for attempting to fight the badger on her own. He notices Yellowfang wince in pain and is concerned for her well-being. Yellowfang shrugs him off and helps the tom walk back to ShadowClan.
Featherstorm sees them and cries for her son. The tom tells her that a badger attacked him and Yellowfang, and Brightflower quickly calls for the medicine cat, Sagewhisker. The white she-cat analyzes Raggedpelt's injuries and asks Yellowfang to speak with her in her den. Yellowfang tries to protest, but she quietly agrees instead. She walks into her den and waits for her return.
