Chapter description

Yellowfang makes herself comfortable in the medicine cat den while waiting for Sagewhisker to return. The white she-cat informs Yellowfang of Raggedpelt's condition, and the two cats stay silent for a minute. Sagewhisker asks if she plans on continuing the warrior life, to which she agrees. Sagewhisker continues to tell her that her gift to feel her Clanmates' pain is a gift. She tells her that the path of a warrior may not be in her best interests and that being a medicine cat would suit her better. Yellowfang becomes offended and accuses Sagewhisker of not wanting to help her. She denies this, and the gray warrior storms out of the medicine cat den.

Brightflower runs over to Yellowfang to let her know that Raggedpelt wants to speak to her. Walking inside, she finds the tom curled into a thick nest. Raggedpelt thanks her for saving his life, but she admits any cat would have done the same. They rekindle over the moment, and Yellowfang offers him a piece of prey to help with his pain. She watches him fall asleep and hopes they can become friends again.

Yellowfang leaves the den and finds Foxpaw staring her down. She ignores the apprentice and finds Stonetooth relaxing under the sunlight. The deputy asks her to lead a patrol to find the badger and drive it out. He invites Archeye, Mousewing, Scorchwind, and Newtspeck to join her and they begin to leave camp. Wolfpaw and Foxpaw exclaim that they are joining the patrol, but the deputy stops them. Yellowfang notices Foxpaw's glare once again but shakes it off. Archeye claims the apprentices could use the experience on the mission. Stonetooth eventually agrees, and the patrol leaves camp.

Wolfpaw and Foxpaw brag about their plans for the badger. Yellowfang remembers the two cubs with their mother and feels guilt for invading their home. She imagines kits of her own and how she would do anything to defend them. Mousewing finds Raggedpelt's scent, along with his blood, on the grass. Yellowfang leads the patrol through the clearing where the badger attacked. She warns Wolfpaw and Foxpaw to stay behind in case of any danger. The group begins to strategize their attack before they enter the den. The ShadowClan warriors add that after the largest badger is killed, they will kill the kits and the mother. Yellowfang feels guilt at the thought of harming the defenseless animals. The patrol proceeds with their plan until Archeye announces the badger is gone. Yellowfang feels relieved until Wolfpaw finds the badger's trail. Yellowfang tells the apprentice that he can't attack a badger alone. Yellowfang leads the cats down the scent until they reach the ShadowClan border. Scorchwind tries to convince Yellowfang to kill them outside the border, but Yellowfang tells him that more cats shouldn't get hurt. The rest of the patrol praises Yellowfang's intuition, and she feels guilt about her ulterior motive.
