Chapter description[]

Yellowfang feels a chill in the air and realizes prey will be scarce this season. She attempts to catch a nearby lizard, but her efforts are disrupted by Raggedpelt, who is also trying to catch it. Yellowfang snaps at the tom, and he quickly apologizes. The two agree to hunt together, returning to camp after a successful hunt. Yellowfang holds a squirrel in her jaws while Raggedpelt compliments her skill. The two cats are interrupted by Foxpaw, who seems excited about the squirrel. She compliments Raggedpelt on the piece of prey, but he redirects her compliment to Yellowfang. Foxpaw's face turns sour, and he turns away from the she-cat. Littlebird calls for Yellowfang across camp to remove a tick. The gray warrior asks if an apprentice can do the task, but the elder adamantly refuses. Foxpaw grows smug as she pulls the tick. Littlebird reminds Yellowfang of her history with Raggedpelt and warns her not to find a mate so fast. She grows embarrassed and quickly leaves the old cat.
Yellowfang visits the fresh-kill pile when more cats appear. She listens to Foxpaw's conversation as she asks Raggedpelt to go on a hunt later. Yellowfang cuts her off and reminds her that she's only an apprentice. Foxpaw tells the gray warrior she passed her final assessment that morning. Brightflower and Blizzardwing compliment their apprentices' hard work, and Cedarstar calls for a Clan meeting. In anticipation, Foxpaw and Wolfpaw quickly run up to the leader. Multiple cats gather around Cedarstar as he gives the cats their warrior ceremony, as well as their new names, Foxheart, and Wolfstep. The Clan cheers for the brand-new warriors. Yellowfang notices the former rogue cats, Boulder and Russetpaw joining in with the Clan's festivities. Raggedpelt turns away and continues to accuse them of being spies.
Foxheart wakes Yellowfang by demanding Toadskip to get up earlier. She grows impatient as the two cats make their way out of the warrior's den. She tries to fall back asleep until a sharp pain attacks her stomach. She recognizes that this pain is not her own but another cat's. Eventually, she heads to Sagewhisker to ask her about the pain. She heaves herself into her den and asks the medicine cat if anyone has a pain in their stomach. Sagewhisker tells her about Nettlespot's hunger and that she doesn't have enough milk for her kits in the nursery. They recognize Nettlespot's prideful nature, and Sagewhisker asks her to deliver some herbs to the queen, and Yellowfang reluctantly agrees. She quickly drops off the medicine and runs out of the den without waiting for a reply. She wonders how she can continue the warrior life with the power of feeling the whole Clan's pain.
