"There's no need to pretend. The whole Clan knows there's something going on between you and Raggedpelt. I think he's kind of cranky, but I guess he's handsome..."

Chapter description[]

Yellowfang observes the snow in ShadowClan camp. She walks to Stonetooth, who is busy organizing the daily patrols. Sagewhisker grabs the warrior, and informs her of Cloudkit's and Nettlespot's condition. She thanks the medicine cat and quickly walks away from her to join the patrols. Stonetooth instructs the gray she-cat to join a border patrol with Crowtail, Hollyflower, and Newtspeck. The group of cats leave camp quickly and admire the vast clumps of snow on the ground. Hollyflower and Yellowfang play in the soft white stuff. Crowtail reminds them to behave like warriors, and they continue with their mission.
They reach the Thunderpath and inspect the area in case of stray cat-scent. After examining the tunnel underneath the Thudnerpath, they check the border near the Twolegplace. Hollyflower calls to Yellowfang and asks what she thinks of a leg-less Twoleg structure. Yellowfang and Hollyflower scrutinize the object and mock kittypets lives. Yellowfang reminds her friend that Russetpaw and Boulder are real cats, but Hollyflower calls them Clan-oriented. They continue with the patrol until they smell a kittypet along the base of the fence. The rest of the patrol finds the scent and calls for the enemy to show themselves. Newtspeck decides to jump the fence and sprains her shoulder. Yellowfang also feels the she-cat's pain and calls for her to return. A kittypet emerges from the wall, and Yellowfang recognizes him as Marmalade. The two cats connect briefly until her ShadowClan Clanmates questions her relationship with the kittypet. Yellowfang shrugs off their question and joins them in mocking the cat. Hollyflower tells Marmalade that Russetpaw and Boulder are a part of ShadowClan. Marmalade looks serious at the accusation and walks away from the patrol. Yellowfang stops her Clanmates from instigating the situation further, and they help Newtspeck back to camp.
Crowtail informs Stonetooth of the situation, while Hollyflower and Yellowfang bring Newtspeck to Sagewhisker for a check-up. The white cat instructs Yellowfang to grab some herbs to remedy Newtspeck's shoulder. After the wounded she-cat settles, Yellowfang quickly leaves and runs into Raggedpelt. The large tom asks if the kittypet has revealed the secret about his father. She denies this, but Raggedpelt grows sour and walks away from her. Rowanberry asks her sister if she had another fight with her mate, but Yellowfang grows defensive about their relationship. Rowanberry doubts her, and they walk their separate ways.
After another hunting patrol, Yellowfang walks around the eerily quiet camp. After a moment, she hears nearby cats moving through the forest. Before seeing the commotion, she recognizes Marmalade and a swarm of Twolegplace cats invading ShadowClan camp.
