"You have an ability I've never come across before. I don't know of any other cats, even medicine cats, who can feel pain in others the way you do. It has been given to you for a reason, and I can only think it means that you should become a medicine cat yourself."
Below contains in-depth information for chapter eighteen of Yellowfang's Secret. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Yellowfang sits in Sagewhisker's den as she waits for her battlewounds to heal. Sagewhisker enters the den and tells Yellowfang that Nettlespot doesn't have enough food or milk for her kits. She asks the gray warrior to help treat, and Yellowfang immediately looks in her storage for sorrel. Sagewhisker thanks her and tells her she is fit enough to watch Russetpaw and Boulder'swarrior ceremony. Yellowfang looks at her in disbelief and thinks about how much time has passed since the fight with WindClan. Raggedpelt enters the den and asks when she can return to her warrior duties. Sagewhisker informs him that she can stretch her legs today before she leaves to treat Nettlespot. Raggedpelt invites Yellowfang to walk to a tree until Cedarstar calls for a Clan meeting. He announces Russetpaw and Boulder's warrior ceremony, and the two cats are given their warrior names Russetfur and Boulder. Yellowfang notices Raggedpelt's disdain for the new warriors, and they continue their walk to the big tree. Raggedpelt mentions staying sharp as a warrior in case they need to fight WindClan again, and he walks her back to the medicine cat den. Sagewhisker informs the two cats that she is heading to the Moonstone. Yellowfang wishes her well and remembers the ThunderClan medicine cat, Featherwhisker, inquiring about ShadowClan's well-being. The ShadowClan medicine cat tells Yellowfang she can return to the warrior's den tomorrow.
Poolcloud enters the den looking for Sagewhisker. Yellowfang wakes, and the gray-and-white she-cat tells her that Cloudkit is vomiting. The gray warrior immediately runs through Sagewhisker's storage to find willow for the kit. They head to the nursery and find Cloudkit sweating and vomiting inside his nest. Nettlespot grows defensive at the warrior, accusing her of not being a medicine cat. Poolcloud calms the queen, and Yellowfang feeds the kit the herb. She asks Poolcloud to grab water, and Cloudkit calms down. Nettlespot watches Yellowfang intently until the tiny white kit asks for milk. Yellowfang denies Cloudkit's request, and the queen agrees until Sagewhisker returns. Yellowfang returns to the medicine den and falls asleep.
Poolcloud wakes the warrior and tells her about Cloudkit's progress. Yellowfang grows slightly annoyed as she revisits the young cat. Cloudkit continuously whines about his hunger and finds Sagewhisker coming in from behind her. Sagewhisker compliments Yellowfang's judgment in treating the white kit. The two turn away from the nursery, and Sagewhisker asks if she has thought about her destiny to become a medicine cat. Yellowfang distances herself from the medicine cat as Sagewhisker praises her potential. The gray warrior remembers her age and has yet to have an apprentice to teach. She worries about the condition of the Clan without their medicine cat and reluctantly agrees under Cedarstar's advice. Sagewhisker advises Yellowfang to tell Raggedpelt as she speaks to the leader.
Yellowfang finds Raggedpelt and Crowtail butting heads in the middle of camp. She interrupts the two cats and pulls the brown tabby tom aside. Raggedpelt asks if she is ready to return to her warrior duties, and Yellowfang informs him that she will be Sagewhisker's new medicine cat apprentice. Raggedpelt listens in disbelief and accuses her of being a coward after the fight with WindClan. Yellowfang tries to defend herself, but Raggedpelt wishes she chose him over the life of a medicine cat.
These two cats came to us from the Twolegplace. At first many of us were afraid that they would not fit into Clan life. I'm pleased to say that we were wrong. Mousewing, can you say the same of Boulder?
Mousewing:
He is a true ShadowClan cat.
Cedarstar:
I, Cedarstar, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn. Boulder, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your own life?
Boulder:
I do.
Cedarstar:
I know that you don't wish to change your name. StarClan will see you are a warrior by what you do, rather than what you are called. They honor your bravery and determination, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadowClan.

Featherstorm:
She has.
Cedarstar:

Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior names. Russetpaw, from this moment you will be known as Russetfur. StarClan honors your loyalty and courage, and we welcome you as full warrior of ShadowClan.
"You'll lose me as well as your life as a warrior. I thought you cared! I thought you wanted to spend your life with me. I-I even thought we might have kits one day. You always have a choice. And I thought you had chosen me."
