Chapter description[]
- After ShadowClan flees back to camp, Yellowfang examines the wounded around her and begins treating injuries. Sagewhisker informs her that Cedarstar has lost a life and only has one more left. The white she-cat warns Yellowfang that they must be prepared for infection from the rat bites. Yellowfang brings wet moss to Raggedpelt, who is sulking near the fresh-kill pile. The tabby tom blames himself for ShadowClan's defeat since it was his idea to attack the rats, but Yellowfang insists he couldn't have known there were so many rats. Crowtail tells Raggedpelt that Cedarstar wants to see him in his den, and Raggedpelt frets that Cedarstar will exile him. However, Cedarstar instead praises Raggedpelt for saving his life and promises him Cloudkit to train when he is old enough.
- At the Gathering a few days later, Yellowfang notices a blue-gray she-cat sitting by herself. She's about to make her way towards the newcomer when a stocky tom with a twisted jaw bumps into her. Not wanting to interrupt them, Yellowfang joins the other medicine cats near the foot of the Great Rock. Noticing ShadowClan's wounds, Featherwhisker asks if her Clan has run into any trouble, but Pinestar starts the Gathering. Cedarstar announces that Stonetooth is retiring to the elders' den, shocking the ShadowClan cats. He declares that Raggedpelt will be his new deputy, and his Clanmates cheer his name. The Clan leader asks for Sagewhisker to speak next, and the white she-cat announces that Yellowfang is her new apprentice. A few days later, Raggedpelt asks Yellowfang if she made the right choice by becoming a medicine cat since he misses her and always wanted her by his side. Yellowfang expresses the same feelings, and the two agree to maintain a secret relationship alongside their regular duties.
