Chapter description[]
- Yellowfang and Raggedpelt maintain their secret relationship throughout newleaf, greenleaf, and leaf-fall. Raggedpelt and Yellowfang play tussle while the latter searches for herbs. Raggedpelt remarks that he needs to return to camp soon to prepare Cloudpaw for his assessment, and Yellowfang feels guilty for keeping him away. However, Raggedpelt insists they aren't harming their Clanmates by spending time together, and he once again reminds her that she can change her mind about becoming a medicine cat. They hear screeches in the distance, and Raggedpelt concludes it is their Clanmates. Racing off to help, the two cats find four rogues attacking Rowanberry, Wolfstep, Blizzardwing, and Cloudpaw. Raggedpelt helps them chase off the vicious rogues, but Yellowfang notices Cloudpaw lying ominously still on the ground. As Yellowfang examines the apprentice, Rowanberry explains how Cloudpaw wanted to join their patrol since he couldn't find Raggedpelt. Yellowfang briefly relinquishes control of her power to locate Cloudpaw's wounds. Sensing agonizing pain in her belly, Yellowfang realizes that his belly has been slashed open. She orders Wolfstep to alert Sagewhisker back at camp and for Blizzardwing to find cobwebs.
- Raggedpelt carries Cloudpaw on his back, and Nettlespot wails for son when they arrive in camp. She frets that the medicine cats must save her son, and Yellowfang vows that they'll do their best. In the medicine den, Raggedpelt lays his apprentice on a bed of moss, and Sagewhisker dismisses him so they can work. After examining Cloudpaw's injury, Sagewhisker wonders if it would be kinder to send Cloudpaw to StarClan, but Yellowfang is determined to save him. As nightfall approaches, Yellowfang asks StarClan if they are punishing Cloudpaw because of her relationship with Raggedpelt. She dreams of treating a two kits, with a thick-furred gray medicine cat providing her herbs. Noticing that there are other medicine cats sharing herbs with her, Yellowfang realizes that she has StarClan's support and wisdom. She wakes up to Cloudpaw's coughing, but as she's searching through her herb storage, Nettlespot arrives and demands to see her son. Sagewhisker guides her away, promising they'll send word if Cloudpaw takes a turn for the worse. She reminds Yellowfang that she cannot save every cat, but Yellowfang is determined to save Cloudpaw's life.
- Raggedpelt arrives in the early morning to check on Cloudpaw, who is still sleeping. Yellowfang keeps her vigil over him until sunset when Sagewhisker urges her to take a break. Her mother Brightflower brings her a vole to eat. She keeps another night-long watch over Cloudpaw until Sagewhisker wakes her in the morning with joyful news: Cloudpaw is awake. The young tom complains that he's thirsty and his belly hurts, and Yellowfang is pleased that he's awake as she replaces his wound dressing. She tells Raggedpelt that Cloudpaw is awake, much to the deputy's relief. Two days later, Cloudpaw recovers enough to walk for short distances, and his Clanmates warmly greet him in the camp clearing. Cedarstar announces that Cloudpaw will earn his warrior name after he's fully recovered. Meanwhile, Sagewhisker commends Yellowfang for dedication and believes she is ready to become a full medicine cat. Yellowfang realizes that this is her destiny, and she vows to give up her relationship with Raggedpelt to become a medicine cat.
