"Very well, but on one condition. You must promise never to tell these kits the truth. It is better that they grow up without a mother than knowing that their mother chose to abandon them."

Chapter description[]

Sagewhisker comments on Yellowfang's exhaustion and extra weight, and Yellowfang wonders if her former mentor knows that she is expecting kits. Outside the medicine den, Yellowfang spots Flintpaw, Nightpaw, Blackpaw, Clawpaw, and Fernpaw playing with discarded bedding until Hollyflower reprimands them. Lizardstripe remarks that Hollyflower must be glad that her kits—Flintpaw, Blackpaw, and Fernpaw—are finally apprentices and wonders if she felt trapped while in the nursery. Hollyflower remarks that Lizardstripe will understand once she's expecting her own kits, and Lizardstripe reveals that she is expecting Mudclaw's. The tabby-and-white she-cat laments that she doesn't want to be stuck in the nursery for moons on end. Sagewhisker scolds Yellowfang for standing around but asks if she's feeling alright. Yellowfang dismisses her worries and leaves to check on the elders. That night, Yellowfang dreams of a dark-pelted tom warning her of a kit who will be born that will destroy the forest.
A few days later, Sagewhisker reveals the she knows Yellowfang is expecting, though Yellowfang insists she parted ways with Raggedpelt before she took her full medicine cat vow. The white she-cat solemnly reveals that she'll soon join StarClan and Yellowfang must remain as a medicine cat. She advises Yellowfang to tell Raggedpelt the truth. Later that day, Yellowfang asks to speak to Raggedpelt alone, and she discloses that she's expecting his kits. Raggedpelt is initially dismayed, but soon he becomes pleased by the news. However, Yellowfang insists that she cannot be their mother and needs to remain ShadowClan's medicine cat. Raggedpelt is enraged by her decision, since he knows what growing up with only one parent is like, and he makes her promise that she'll never tell the kits the truth.
