"Lizardstripe nodded, stretching out a paw to touch the bend in his tail. That was where every cat would think his name came from. But Yellowfang knew the truth. She named her son for the feeling in her chest as she left him there, as if her heart were cleaving into two, as if her life had broken down the middle."

Chapter description[]

A few days later, Yellowfang is woken up by pains in her belly, and she knows that she will soon give birth. Slipping out of camp through the dirtplace, Yellowfang travels to a hollow dead tree across the border where her Clan won't find her. After an agonizing birth, Yellowfang delivers three kits: two she-kits and a tom-kit. However, one of she-kits is born dead. As Yellowfang grooms her kits, the tom lets out an angry squeal, and Yellowfang notices how he resembles his father Raggedpelt in color, but has a flat face and a bend in his tail. Despite grooming her kits to the best of her ability, the other she-kit dies, leaving only the tom. As she focuses her attention on the tom-kit, Yellowfang is shocked by the apparent rage on his tiny face, wondering if this was the cat the black StarClan tom had warned her about. However, her heart softens when she sees how helpless he is. Yellowfang briefly buries her two she-kits before traveling back to ShadowClan with her son.
Raggedpelt warmly greets her when they arrive, his attention solely on the tom-kit. In the nursery, Lizardstripe scorns the tom-kit when Raggedpelt and Yellowfang arrive with him. Yellowfang asks Lizardstripe to care for the tom-kit since his mother wishes to keep her identity a secret. When Lizardstripe begins to complain, Raggedpelt remarks that the kit is the Clan deputy's son, and she should be grateful for being given such an honor. The queen finally accepts the tiny kit, and Yellowfang meows that his name is Brokenkit after the feeling in her heart. In the medicine den, Sagewhisker remarks that Yellowfang made the right choice and offers her companion some parsley. Despite yearning for her son, Yellowfang resolves that Brokenkit is no longer her son.
