Chapter description[]

Yellowfang journeys to the Moonstone for the half-moon meeting, alone without Sagewhisker due to pain in her legs and belly. Brambleberry greets Yellowfang, though Featherwhisker prods about ShadowClan's well-being. As they travel down the tunnel, Hawkheart and Yellowfang bond over their shared histories of training as warriors first and then becoming medicine cats. Hawkheart detects the scent of parsley on her pelt, and Yellowfang lies that she found a sheltered clump the other day. In her dreams at the Moonstone, Yellowfang is greeted by her grandmother, Silverflame, who laments the path her kin had to walk. Yellowfang presses Silverflame for further knowledge about her kits and the strange black tom she kept meeting. The gray-and-ginger she-cat remarks that it sounds like Molepelt, a former ShadowClan medicine cat, but advises that she shouldn't pay much attention to his strange mumblings.
Yellowfang urges that Molepelt told her that a cat would be born that would destroy the forest, and she wonders if Brokenkit is that kit. Silverflame insists that she shouldn't speak ill about her son and to be a comforting presence in his life as he grows up if she cannot be his mother. As she begins to fade away, Yellowfang asks if her daughters are in StarClan, and she briefly catches a glimpse of her two she-kits watching from the distance.
A few days later, Yellowfang notices Lizardstripe sharing tongues with Ashheart in the camp clearing and wonders where her kits are. She finds the four kits behind the medicine den, where Deerkit, Tanglekit, and Runningkit surround Brokenkit and bully him about his heritage. Tanglekit calls Brokenkit a kittypet like his father, but the tiny kit defends his father's honor. Deerkit sneers that he doesn't know who his mother is, and Yellowfang interrupts as the kits begin mocking Brokenkit. She leads Brokenkit away after admonishing the other kits, though Brokenkit is frustrated that he was unable to teach them a lesson by fighting them. Yellowfang promises to speak to Lizardstripe about it, but Brokenkit begs her not to since Lizardstripe will only blame him. Instead, Yellowfang lets Brokenkit help her out in the medicine den, and she wonders if he might become her apprentice.
