Chapter description[]
- Now the height of newleaf, Brokenkit and his foster littermates are now four moons old. The tiny tom-kit plays with some moss while Yellowfang sorts herbs to dry. She attempts to teach him some medicinal knowledge, but Brokenkit is determined to train as a warrior instead of a medicine cat. Runningkit pokes his head into the medicine den, but the gray-and-white tom-kit scurries away when Yellowfang tries to beckon him inside. Nightpelt arrives, his cough still persisting despite the herbs and changes to his diet. Yellowfang explains how Hawkheart had told her of a WindClan warrior who had similar symptoms and had to retire to the elders' den early. Nightpelt is determined to still contribute to his Clan, but Sagewhisker interrupts since she found Brokenkit playing with their moss in the herb storage. Brokenkit insists he just wanted some more moss to play with, but Deerkit and Tanglekit pass by to mock Brokenkit for playing with old she-cats and a sick warrior. Brokenkit swipes at his foster littermates to leave. Yellowfang attempts to reassure Brokenkit, but the tiny kit scowls that his littermates are right about him. Sagewhisker murmurs to Yellowfang that it might be for the best if Brokenkit stops visiting, but Yellowfang just wants to help her son.
- Brokenkit avoids the medicine den in the days following, but he still plays alone. While play fighting with a stick, Brokenkit's Clanmates remark how strange he is but acknowledge his strength that'll make him a powerful warrior. Raggedpelt stops by his son with a few tips on battling. Brokenkit masters the new moves quickly, and Raggedpelt praises to Cedarstar that his son is ready to become an apprentice. However, Cedarstar insists that Brokenkit still needs to learn about honor and loyalty. Abruptly, Yellowfang hears a cry from her den. Racing quickly, Yellowfang finds Sagewhisker collapsed on the ground in searing agony. With Yellowfang and Brightflower at her side, Sagewhisker insists that StarClan is calling for her, and she shortly passes. Her abrupt death stuns Yellowfang, and the Clan begins to grieve for their medicine cat. At her vigil, Littlebird murmurs that Yellowfang will be a great medicine cat like Sagewhisker, but Yellowfang is doubtful.
