"We could, but we're not going to because we're too courteous and honorable to go wandering over another Clan's borders without good reason. There's another tunnel, too, that leads directly onto WindClan territory over there. And before you ask, no, WindClan warriors aren't just rabbit-eating nuisances, even if that's what you've heard. But you don't need to be afraid of them, either. ShadowClan is a match for any Clan."

Chapter description[]

Lizardstripe's kits are finally apprenticed two moons later; Cedarstar appoints Wolfstep to Tanglepaw, Cloudpelt to Deerpaw, and Nightpelt to Brokenpaw. Yellowfang hopes Nightpelt will teach Brokenpaw some patience, but Brokenpaw is displeased to have Nightpelt as his mentor. Cedarstar then appoints Runningpaw to be Yellowfang's apprentice. Runningpaw is eager to train as a medicine cat, and Yellowfang mentions some herbs as they tour the territory. When they return to camp, the pair spot Nightpelt and Brokenpaw arguing in the camp entrance, with Brokenpaw insisting he wants to begin battle training immediately. Yellowfang tells Runningpaw to run ahead and pick something from the fresh-kill pile while she speaks to Nightpelt. The medicine cat suggests that Brokenpaw is big enough to learn battle moves, but Nightpelt snaps that he is Brokenpaw's mentor. In camp, Yellowfang speaks to Cedarstar about his choice of Nightpelt as Brokenpaw's mentor, believing Brokenpaw needs a stronger cat to train him. The Clan leader insists that he chose Nightpelt deliberately to teach Brokenpaw patience and selflessness.
The Gathering is a quarter-moon later, and Runningpaw is eager to meet the other medicine cats. After giving a rundown of the other medicine cats, Yellowfang quizzes Runningpaw on the herbs she picked out for Lizardfang to increase his appetite. As ShadowClan heads for the Gathering, Brokenpaw abruptly darts away to examine the ThunderClan scent marks at the border, and a few older warriors commend his strategy. ShadowClan is the first Clan to arrive at Fourtrees, and Nightpelt scolds Brokenpaw for trying to climb the Great Rock. The other Clans soon arrive, and Yellowfang introduces Runningpaw to Brambleberry, Featherwhisker, and Hawkheart. Hawkheart introduces his own apprentice, Barkpaw. The Gathering begins, and Cedarstar announces the four new apprentices. During Heatherstar's report, Brokenpaw starts a fight with two young WindClan apprentices after accusing them of crossing the Thunderpath to trespass on ShadowClan territory. Cedarstar admonishes Brokenpaw and apologizes to Heatherstar. After Heatherstar finishes her report, Cedarstar declares that they are leaving. Raggedpelt confronts Cedarstar about singling out Brokenpaw in front of the other Clans, but the Clan leader insists that Brokenpaw broke the rules of the truce. Yellowfang hopes that Brokenpaw will learn to control his temper.

Mentioned[]

Important events[]

  • Lizardstripe's kits are named apprentices: Brokenpaw to Nightpelt, Deerpaw to Cloudpelt, Tanglepaw to Wolfstep, and Runningpaw to Yellowfang.[13]
  • Deerleap, Archeye, and Crowtail retire to the elders' den.[3]

Ceremonies[]

Errors[]

  • Barkpaw is introduced as Hawkheart's new apprentice,[6] despite being older than Yellowfang.[14]
  • In Bluestar's Prophecy, Brokenpaw starts a fight with two RiverClan apprentices,[15] but in Yellowfang's Secret, he starts a fight between two WindClan apprentices.[8] Leopardfoot said that Cedarstar assigned Brokenpaw to clean the elders' den for the next moon in Bluestar's Prophecy,[16] but Yellowfang's Secret doesn't show that happening; even if it did happen, it would have been away from Fourtrees, where she couldn't have heard the punishment, as ShadowClan left as soon as the Gathering was over.[17]
