Chapter description[]

In late greenleaf, Yellowfang is surprised to see several scratches on Tanglepaw's haunch. She is fearful that there might be a fox on their territory, but Tanglepaw gleefully explains that Brokenpaw said they can practice fighting techniques better if their claws are unsheathed. Yellowfang scolds Tanglepaw, but knows that her warning went through deaf ears. She confronts Nightpelt about Brokenpaw's training methods, but the black warrior bitterly scorns that he cannot control his apprentice.
Yellowfang wakes up in the middle of the night with pain in her belly. Hearing groans coming from the leader's den, Yellowfang and Raggedpelt find Cedarstar writhing in pain. Cedarstar declares that StarClan is calling for him, and he entrusts Raggedpelt to watch over ShadowClan. The ShadowClan leader then dies, and Yellowfang realizes that whatever killed him had taken his final life quickly. Raggedpelt prepares to summon the Clan so he can visit the Moonstone, though Yellowfang is shocked that he wishes to claim his nine lives while Cedarstar's body is still warm. Raggedpelt announces Cedarstar's death to the Clan. Brokenpaw cheers his father's leader name, though Raggedpelt insists he cannot claim that title until he receives his nine lives from StarClan. The elders prepare Cedarstar's body for vigil.
Raggedpelt races to Highstones, eager to receive his nine lives. Once they sleep by the Moonstone, Yellowfang and Raggedpelt wake up in a marshy space. Cedarstar warmly greets Raggedstar with Lizardfang and Sagewhisker at his side. As Raggedpelt receives his nine lives, Molepelt calls Yellowfang to the side and warns her to beware the cat with blood on his paws. Spooked by the former medicine cat's message, Yellowfang attacks him, but Molepelt disappears. She catches the ending of Raggedpelt's ceremony, where Dawnstar grants him a life for putting ShadowClan above all other Clans. StarClan hails him by his new name, Raggedstar.
Back at camp, Yellowfang prepares Cedarstar's body for burial with the elders. When they return, Raggedstar names Foxheart his new deputy. Deerpaw whispers to Brokenpaw how lucky he is to have his father as the Clan leader, and Brokenpaw remarks that he bets his father wishes he was a warrior so he could be deputy. After the ceremony, Yellowfang treats Littlebird's head pain, and the elder remarks how her dreams have been troubled lately.
Roughly two moons later, Raggedstar names Brokenpaw a warrior, despite only training for five moons and not completing an assessment. His father names his Brokentail. The Clan leader's choice is not a popular one; Deerpaw comments that Brokentail only became a warrior because of favoritism, and Archeye mocks that kits will soon become warriors at this rate. Yellowfang notices Brokentail's pelt glistening and hears Molepelt's warning in her ear. She asks about the blood on Brokentail's paws but the tom is surprised, explaining that he got wet while hunting in the marshes. Brokentail's fellow warriors congratulate him on becoming a warrior, and Raggedstar tells Yellowfang that he is proud of his son.
