Chapter description[]
- When leaf-bare arrives, Yellowfang visits Raggedstar's den to speak to him about Nightpelt's prolonged illness. When Foxheart confronts the medicine cat for interrupting them, but Raggedstar asks Yellowfang to send Nightpelt to him so they can discuss his future. Yellowfang finds Boulder waiting for her inside her den with a thorn stuck in his pad. The gray warrior explains how he was trying to catch a blackbird to impress Brokentail. After he leaves, Runningpaw asks Yellowfang about her opinion about who Brokentail's mother might be, but the pair are alerted by yowls from the camp entrance. Lizardstripe reports that her patrol was attacked by rats from the Carrionplace.
- As Yellowfang and Runningpaw treat the patrol's wounds, Brokentail suggests they should raid the Carrionplace to each the rats a lesson. Raggedstar gathers Brokentail and Foxheart in his den to talk strategy, and Yellowfang and Runningpaw prepare leaf-wraps for the inevitable battle. Nightpelt offers to help, revealing to Yellowfang that he's decided to retire to the elders' den. Yellowfang apologizes for being unable to cure his coughing and reassures that he'll still be a valued member of the Clan.
- In the morning, Raggedstar announces the plan: he and Foxheart will draw out the rats by pretending to hunt nearby, while Brokentail's patrol waits for the right moment. Upon Brokentail's signal, Brackenfoot's patrol will hold back the rats so Brokentail's patrol can kill the others. As ShadowClan sets off for the Carrionplace, Yellowfang and Runningpaw take shelter underneath a holly bush nearby. Brackenfoot and Brokentail line up their patrols while Raggedstar and Foxheart pretend to hunt. Soon, several rats emerge to stalk the Clan leader and deputy, until Brokentail leaps out with a battle cry.
