"Use your brain. I'm your father, and I have to be careful not to show favoritism in front of the other warriors. Besides, you need an apprentice before you can be deputy. But don't worry. I've many seasons left in me, and if anything should happen to Cloudpelt, it will be your turn next."

Chapter description[]

Brackenfoot and his patrol hold back the rats as Raggedstar, Foxheart, Brokentail and his patrol slaughter numerous rats. However, two rats jump on Foxheart, blood gushing from her neck. ShadowClan's formerly organized plan falters as chaos erupts in the battle. Only after several rats are killed do the rest retreat into the Carrionplace. Runningpaw remarks that they won, but Yellowfang realizes they've paid a price for their victory as Brokentail carries Foxheart's body back to camp. As Foxheart's kin mourns her, Raggedstar names Cloudpelt his new deputy, and Brokentail's disappointment is easily noticed. Brokentail confronts his father for not naming him deputy since the rat attack was his idea. However, Raggedstar explains that his son still needs an apprentice, but he promises that Brokentail will have his turn if something were to happen to Cloudpelt.
As newleaf arrives, Nightpelt accompanies Yellowfang to gather herbs in the new growth. While following a prey scent, Nightpelt and Yellowfang are astonished to see Stumpypaw, Rowanberry's son, hanging from a branch with his teeth. Stumpypaw falls to the ground when he attempts to explain himself, and the young apprentice grovels that his mentor Brokentail ordered him up there because he kept talking during training. Brokentail arrives and scolds Yellowfang for interfering with his training, but the medicine cat argues that Stumpypaw could've hurt himself. In camp, Brokentail forbids Stumpypaw from eating until he's caught prey for the elders. Yellowfang speaks to Cloudpelt about Brokentail's harsh training methods, and while Cloudpelt is aware of it, he is hesitant to get involved since Stumpypaw wasn't injured. When she returns to her den disgruntled, Runningpaw brings a fresh vole to Yellowfang. The gray she-cat decides that it is time Runningpaw earned his full name, much to the younger tom's delight.
At the half-moon meeting, Featherwhisker announces that Goosefeather has died, but he has hopes that Spottedkit will be his new apprentice soon. Yellowfang also announces that Runningpaw will earn his full medicine cat name. She names him Runningnose as a reminder that medicine cats cannot cure everything but need to have the faith to try. As the medicine cats share with StarClan, Yellowfang dreams of kits being torn away from their mother's with blood pooling. Runningnose wakes her up from her nightmare, but Yellowfang refuses to speak about it and instead hurries out of the tunnel.
