Chapter description[]

A moon later, Yellowfang and Runningnose are woken up by Frogtail, who wrenched his shoulder during one of Brokentail's required night patrols. As sleep eludes Yellowfang for the rest of the night, she reflects how the Clan is growing with Featherstorm's and Newtspeck's litters but worries how the Clan will feed them all with leaf-bare approaching. In the morning, Yellowfang goes on a walk with Nightpelt. They run into Stumpytail's patrol leaving for battle training, though Yellowfang wonders if they should prioritize hunting instead. When she and Nightpelt return to camp, Yellowfang busies herself by checking on Volekit's cough, treating Amberleaf's torn ear, and helping Runningnose clean the elders' nests. With no apprentices in the Clan, Brokentail has assigned Amberleaf to take care of the traditional apprentice duties. Raggedstar grows troubled when he hears that Brokentail has not ordered any hunting patrols yet. However, after Brokentail returns from a successful battle training session with his Clanmates, the Clan deputy insists he already sent cats to search for prey.
Runningnose reminds Yellowfang of the half-moon meeting that night and offers to stay behind to finish up so Yellowfang can attend. Trekking to Highstones, Yellowfang catches up with Featherwhisker and Brambleberry. The RiverClan medicine cat introduces her new apprentice, Mudpaw. Hawkheart and Barkpaw wait for them up ahead, and the medicine cats are introduced to Barley, who had recently arrived at the farm at the edge of WindClan's territory. At the Moonstone, Yellowfang dreams of a blood-filled battle, and she realizes with horror that kits are fighting. Molepelt looms over Yellowfang and warns her that fire and blood will destroy the Clans. Yellowfang hopes to wake up from this nightmare, but Silverflame comforts her. She warns that terrible things are coming and Yellowfang is powerless to stop them. Featherwhisker wakes Yellowfang up and asks if she had a terrible dream, but Yellowfang instead hurries back to camp to inform Raggedstar. The Clan leader instead informs Yellowfang he had a terrible dream of kits killing each other battle.
