Chapter description[]
- Yellowfang is horrified that she and Raggedstar experienced the same nightmare. Raggedstar is astonished that StarClan would send him dreams of kits dying in battle, as it goes against the warrior code, but as they hear Brokentail's harsh training instructions, both leader and medicine cat realize that future is inevitable under Brokentail's leadership. Raggedstar realizes he made a terrible mistake naming their son deputy, but Yellowfang insists it is not her problem to solve since Raggedstar repeatedly reiterated that Brokentail was not her son. Back in camp, Fernshade excitedly informs Yellowfang that she is expecting Wolfstep's kits, though the gray she-cat fears what might happen to them. Outside the medicine den, Deerfoot and Tangleburr loudly complain how Raggedstar interrupted their battle training session with Brokentail. Frogtail shoves the elders Poolcloud and Archeye away from the scrawny fresh-kill pile, demanding that he needs prey more than them, though Brokentail sharply reprimands Frogtail for his actions. Leader and deputy are united to feed their Clan, but Yellowfang wonders how long it will be until Brokentail defies his father.
- That night, Yellowfang searches the fresh-kill pile for more prey when Brokentail bounds into camp with news of Raggedstar's death by a WindClan ambush. Yellowfang rushes out of camp and finds Raggedstar's body near the tunnel underneath the Thunderpath that leads to WindClan's territory—all nine of his lives ripped away at once. Scorchwind, Blackfoot, and Boulder return from having chased the WindClan patrol away and are shocked by their leader's sudden death. Brokentail emotionally insists that he will carry his father's body back to camp alone.
