"I know, but Brokenstar is our leader. StarClan gave him nine lives. They have done nothing to stop him so far. This must be their will as well as his."
Below contains in-depth information for chapter thirty-seven of Yellowfang's Secret. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
As Fernshade struggles to give birth, Yellowfang sharply orders Volekit and the other four kits to leave the nursery and play with Mosspaw to give the queen some space. Fernshade soon gives birth to a single tom-kit, and she names him Badgerkitafter his striped face resembling a badger. Yellowfang is grateful for the new life, recalling how Stonetooth died recently and Brokenstar has relentlessly led ShadowClan into numerous battles against WindClan and ThunderClan. Brownkit waits for Yellowfang in her den with a wrenched shoulder, explaining how Brokenstar had taken all the kits training with Mosspaw. Yellowfang is horrified that Brokenstar is training kits when they are still so young, though Brownkit and Runningnose are not as worried.
Brokenstar calls a Clan meeting to discuss how ShadowClan can become stronger, and he proposes that the elders should leave camp since they cannot contribute to the Clan anymore. A few warriors disagree with Brokenstar's suggestion, but others, such as Deerfoot and Cinderfur, agree the elders might be more comfortable living away from camp with all the battle training. Nightpelt eventually relents, and he leads Archeye, Poolcloud, Crowtail, and Hollyflower out of camp. Yellowfang and Runningnose help them locate a suitable place to live in a dirt hollow within ShadowClan's territory, though the elders believe they have been exiled. Yellowfang confronts Brokenstar in the training area supervising Mosspaw and the kits as they train. She argues against his decision to train kits and banish the elders, but Brokenstar insists the elders are still taken care of and the kits are eager to become warriors. At that moment, Mosspaw is killed on accident by Brownkit and Wetkit while training, and Yellowfang brings his body back to camp. However, instead of grieving, Brokenstar instead names the other five kits apprentices and forces Mosspaw's mother, Featherstorm, to retire as an elder. After Featherstorm leaves the camp to join the other elders in the forest, Clawface and Rowanberry whisper to each other about Brokenstar's decisions, though Tangleburr hisses for them to be quiet. After the Clan meeting, Brightflower excitedly tells Yellowfang that she is expecting her second litter of kits.
Stonetooth has died due to complications from old age.[4]
Mosspaw is killed in a training exercise with Brownkit and Wetkit.[11]
Ceremonies[]
Volekit's apprentice ceremony
Brokenstar:
Volepaw, you will be my apprentice. Clawface, I know I promised him to you, but you can have Littlepaw instead. I owe it to Mosspaw to train his brother in his place. Blackfoot, you take Dawnpaw. Boulder, you will have Wetpaw, and Stumpytail will have Brownpaw.
