Chapter description[]

Brightflower wakes up Yellowfang in the middle of night since Mintkit and Marigoldkit are missing. Yellowfang helps her search for the two kits, checking the apprentices' and warriors' dens for them. She wakes up Clawface, who suggests checking the night patrol since he overheard the littermates eagerly talking about sneaking out to join them. However, Blackfoot's night patrol returns and they haven't seen Brightflower's kits. The warriors offer to search for them at once. Yellowfang joins the search and hears a fox barking in the distance. She hopes it hasn't found the kits when she detects the scent of blood. Bursting to a small clearing, Yellowfang finds Mintkit's and Marigoldkit's bodies. Brokenstar and Brightflower soon find her with the dead kits; Yellowfang suspects a fox killed them, though Brokenstar says he cannot scent one nearby.
Back at camp, Brokenstar orders Russetfur and Frogtail to fetch the kits' bodies. Yellowfang begins to explain how she found the kits in the clearing, but Brokenstar interjects that he found Yellowfang with the dead kits, and she claims that a fox killed them. However, Brokenstar found no trace of fox nearby. He blames the kits' deaths on Yellowfang. The Clan begins to remember Yellowfang's foul attitude towards them in the recent days. When Brightflower arrives with her dead kits, she angrily questions her older daughter if she killed them, much to Yellowfang's horror. Runningnose attempts to defend Yellowfang's honor, especially when Brokenstar accuses Yellowfang of not treating the kits' wounds when she found them. Brokenstar sentences Yellowfang to exile, and Yellowfang accuses him of orchestrating everything to get rid of her. Runningnose insists he'll find out the truth, but Yellowfang resolves that this isn't the ShadowClan she knows as she leaves the camp.

Characters[]

Major[]

Minor[]

Important events[]

  • Yellowfang is exiled from ShadowClan after Brokenstar accuses her of killing Mintkit and Marigoldkit.[10]

Deaths[]

  • Mintkit and Marigoldkit are killed.[4] Brokenstar blames Yellowfang for killing them,[6] though Brokenstar himself killed them.[11]

Errors[]

  • Clawface is mistakenly called a gray tom.[3]
  • There is an inconsistency in the deaths of Marigoldkit and Mintkit among the books: In Into the Wild, though the kits are not mentioned by name, Brightflower's kits are killed by Brokenstar during a training session and are brought back to ShadowClan camp where Brokenstar blames Yellowfang for their deaths.[11] However, in Yellowfang's Secret, Yellowfang believes a fox is responsible due to hearing one bark and their scent, but her Clanmates find no proof of a fox and blame her instead.[4]
