Chapter description[]

Yellowpaw wakes up exhausted from her trip to the Twolegplace with Raggedpelt as her mentor Deerleap calls for her outside the apprentices' den. In the camp clearing, Stonetooth is organizing battle patrols to raid the Carrionplace for rats since prey is scarce. Noticing Raggedpelt's cold attitude towards Yellowpaw as the warriors prepare to leave, Rowanpaw asks her sister if the two had a fight, causing Finchflight to silence the two she-cats. As the ShadowClan cats leave for the Carrionplace, Yellowpaw asks Raggedpelt if he is alright, but the tabby tom brushes her concerns off. When they arrive at the Carrionplace, Cedarstar explains that the patrols will split up after he gives the signal. Stonetooth warns the members of his battle patrol to work in pairs and to never attack a rat alone since rats are cunning and vicious.
Yellowpaw is paired with Archeye, and the two cats slink into the Carrionplace. The gray she-cat notices a rat sticking its head out between the Twoleg muck and leaps on it, and Archeye snags it before it can bite Yellowpaw. Their rat slithers away towards the rubbish, but Yellowpaw pounces on it and delivers a killing bite. Archeye praises her quick thinking, and Yellowpaw is pleased that their rat is the largest compared to everyone else's catch. While the rest of her Clanmates compliments their catch, Stonetooth scolds Raggedpelt for ignoring Yellowpaw's catch, and the tabby tom grumble praises her prey. When they return to camp, Cedarstar commends Yellowpaw's catch. She is pleased that her Clan leader thought highly of her hunting skills, though she notices Sagewhisker watching her. Brightflower and Brackenfoot congratulate their daughter.
Two moons later in newleaf, Deerleap takes Yellowpaw to the Moonstone, and Yellowpaw is excited that she is nearing her warrior assessment. They visit Sagewhisker's den for traveling herbs first, and Sagewhisker reminds Yellowpaw that this might be the moment she learns her destiny, though Yellowpaw insists that her destiny is to be a great ShadowClan warrior. They travel along the Thunderpath towards the Highstones. While they rest for a bit, Deerleap announces that she'll be retiring to the elders' den soon and she is very proud of Yellowpaw. Resuming their travels at nightfall, Deerleap leads Yellowpaw through Mothermouth towards the Moonstone cavern. The stone illuminates from the moon, and Deerleap instructs her apprentice to touch her muzzle to the stone. In her dreams, Yellowpaw experiences a torrent of images: her warrior ceremony, her giving birth to three kits, and her empty home. Deerleap wakes Yellowpaw up from her nightmare and advises her apprentice to never share what she dreamt. Yellowpaw feels conflicted on what StarClan showed her.
