Chapter 1 - Yellowkit

  • Yellowkit, Nutkit, and Rowankit are playing in the ShadowClan camp and Yellowkit tells Nutkit to be a WindClan warrior, because she wants to show off her battle moves.
    • Raggedkit and Scorchkit interrupt their game, boasting about the battle moves they know and demonstrate for the younger kits.
  • Nutkit suggests to his littermates that they should go catch mice in the brambles, and Raggedkit teases Nutkit, angering Nutkit, and he calls Raggedkit a kittypet.
    • Yellowkit remembers overhearing the elders discussing who Raggedkit and Scorchkit's father was, and how it was possible it was a kittypet.
  • The five kits are about to get into a fight when Brightflower calls Yellowkit and her littermates back to the nursery.

  • Cedarstar calls a Clan meeting to make Scorchkit and Raggedkit apprentices.
  • Yellowkit feels as if she has a thorn in her paw, but when Brightflower looks there's nothing there.
  • After the meeting, Yellowkit goes to see Sagewhisker. Yellowkit waits outside while Sagewhisker treats Lizardstripe, who had stepped on a thorn.
    • When Lizardstripe comes out Yellowkit's paw has stopped hurting, and she can't find a trace of anything sharp in the ground.

  • Yellowkit and Nutkit wake up in the night with stomachaches.
    • Brightflower notices them and goes to get Sagewhisker, but first asks if they ate anything.
    • Nutkit tells her that he found, and then ate some of a dead sparrow. Yellowkit says she didn't eat any of it, but Brightflower and Sagewhisker don't believe her.
    • Sagewhisker comes over with herbs, and Yellowkit asks if she's going to give them herbs to make them sick. Sagewhisker says yes, and feeds them the yarrow.
  • The next day Yellowkit wakes up hungry but remembers that Brightflower told her not to eat anything.
  • Yellowkit goes by the elders as Lizardfang tells a story of how they chased out a WindClan warrior.
  • Yellowkit passes by the fresh kill-pile and is tempted by a mouse, but Sagewhisker stops her.
    • To entertain Yellowkit, Sagewhisker teaches about herbs.

  • Yellowkit worries that Silverflame is getting sick.
  • Yellowkit sees Brackenfoot, her father, training , Raggedpaw, and watches them.
  • Yellowkit, Rowankit, and Nutkit have their apprentice ceremonies and receive their new names: Yellowpaw, Rowanpaw, and Nutpaw
  • Yellowpaw feels a sharp pain in her belly at the start of the tour of the territory with her mentor.
    • They go back to camp, but Yellowpaw sees that Sagewhisker is busy, so they resume the tour.
  • When they come back to camp, Brightflower reveals that Silverflame is dying.

  • Yellowpaw visits Silverflame for the last time.
    • Yellowpaw begs Sagewhisker to help the ailing she-cat, but Sagewhisker explains that she cannot do any more.
    • Yellowpaw goes for a walk with Littlebird as Silverflame dies, grieving while Littlebird tries to comfort her.
  • Yellowpaw goes hunting with Deerleap, and catches a blackbird and a lizard.
    • Yellowpaw sees Nutpaw and Rowanpaw by the fresh-kill pile with fresh-kill that they caught.
  • Deerleap suggests a joint training session with all the apprentices.
    • When they get to the training hollow, Raggedpaw and Scorchpaw are practicing moves.
    • Yellowpaw practices with Nutpaw, and Rowanpaw with Scorchpaw.
    • Rowanpaw gets injured, and Yellowpaw collapses too, feeling her sister's pain.
    • Crowtail scolds Scorchpaw because he didn't have his claws sheathed and injured Rowanpaw.
    • Amberleaf asks Nutpaw what he did to Yellowpaw, but Nutpaw announces that he didn't hurt his sister.
  • After returning to camp, Raggedpaw teaches Yellowpaw more battle moves.

  • Yellowpaw and her littermates are following Deerleap for a training session with Wolfpaw and Foxpaw.
  • Deerleap pairs the apprentices up and sends them off to hunt as partners.
  • Yellowpaw smells strange cats near the Thunderpath and spot evidence of WindClan cats at the border.
    • Yellowpaw and Foxpaw explain to Brightflower and Blizzardwing about WindClan on their territory.
    • Brightflower and the rest of the mentors call for the apprentices to bring extra warriors.
    • Deerleap asks Yellowpaw if she is ready for a battle against WindClan, to which she quickly agrees.
  • ShadowClan invades WindClan territory.
    • Reedfeather encounters the ShadowClan cats and asks them to leave.
    • The patrol doesn't move and Stonetooth leaps onto the WindClan deputy.
    • Raggedpaw saves Yellowpaw from a large WindClan tom, annoying Yellowpaw.
  • The battle ends, and ShadowClan returns to their camp victorious.
  • Cedarstar gives Raggedpaw his warrior name, Raggedpelt.

  • Yellowpaw attends the Gathering and sits with her father, Brackenfoot.
  • WindClan enters Fourtrees and surround Raggedpelt and Yellowpaw.
    • The WindClan warriors taunt Raggedpelt about his heritage.
    • Yellowpaw decides that she will help Raggedpelt find out who his father is as the Gathering begins.
  • After the Gathering, Yellowpaw struggles to rest as she wonders about Raggedpelt's father and admires Raggedpelt's skill.
  • Yellowpaw wakes up Lizardfang and Littlebird and asks him what they know about Raggedpelt's father.
  • The next night, Yellowpaw wakes Raggedpelt and explains her plan to find his father.
  • The two cats travel to Twolegplace, and meet three kittypets: Marmalade, Red and Pixie.
    • They are hostile at first, but decide the best way to get rid of them is to find answers to their questions, and lead them to meet Jay.
  • The kittypets chase Yellowpaw and Raggedpelt away, but are stopped by a small she-cat who introduces them to Hal.
    • Hal denies knowing anything about forest cats, yet bears a striking resemblance to Raggedpelt.

  • The next morning, Yellowpaw is chosen for a patrol to go hunt in the Carrionplace, as prey is scarce.
  • Yellowpaw attempts to talk to Raggedpelt, but he brushes her off.
  • The patrol splits off into pairs, and Archeye and Yellowpaw hunt together.
    • Raggedpelt is scolded by Stonetooth for being cold to Yellowpaw.
  • Two moons pass, and Deerleap tells Yellowpaw that they are going to the Moonstone.
    • Sagewhisker tells Yellowpaw to listen to what StarClan says, which confuses Yellowpaw.
    • Deerleap announces Yellowpaw that she is going to retire and become an elder soon.
  • The two cats enter the cavern where the Moonstone lies, and Yellowpaw dreams.
    • She dreams of her warrior name being Yellowfang, before the scene shifts to her having kits, and then again to her overwhelmed by loss and anger.
    • When she wakes, Deerleap orders her to leave the place quickly, and tells Yellowpaw that she must never tell anyone what she saw in her dreams.

  • Yellowpaw and her littermates have their warrior ceremonies, becoming Yellowfang, Nutwhisker, and Rowanberry.
  • Sagewhisker congratulates Yellowfang, and asks about her Moonstone dream.
  • Later, Yellowfang is on a border patrol with Hollyflower, Newtspeck, and Toadskip, and the patrol finds evidence of prey-stealing.
    • The patrol splits up to find the intruder, but have no luck and return to camp.
  • Cedarstar leads a patrol later in the evening to find the intruders.
  • Red, Boulder, and several other Twolegplace cats fight the Clan cats, and the Clan cats manage to chase them off.
  • Yellowfang is overcome with pain despite not being visibly injured.
    • Sagewhisker checks her over, but finds no injury.
    • The medicine cat begins questioning Yellowfang over where her wounds are, and reveals that Yellowfang is feeling the pain from wounds other cats sustained.

  • Several of Yellowfang's Clanmates see her storm away from the medicine cat's den and ask if she is alright.
    • Rowanberry goes after her when she leaves the camp, but Yellowfang sends her away when she feels her sister's injured claw.
  • Yellowfang decides to continue being a warrior.
  • During a hunting patrol, Yellowfang, Featherstorm, Blizzardwing, Nutwhisker, and Foxpaw discuss a badger living on their territory while returning to camp.
  • Toadskip and Nettlespot escort Red and Boulder into the ShadowClan camp.
    • The two cats ask to join ShadowClan.
    • Cedarstar decides to allow the two to stay for one moon, during which they will need to prove they deserve to properly join the Clan.
  • Later that night, Boulder and Red talk to Yellowfang about her and Raggedpelt's trip to the Twolegplace.
    • Red promises to keep it a secret.
  • Cedarstar holds an apprentice ceremony for Red and Boulder.
    • Red is renamed Russetpaw and assigned Featherstorm as her mentor.
    • Boulder requests to keep his original name and is assigned Mousewing as his mentor.
    • Several cats express their disapproval, though Yellowfang supports her leader's decision.

  • Yellowfang takes part in a training session led by Brackenfoot.
    • Both she and Rowanberry are impressed by Russetpaw and Boulder's tenacity and skills.
  • Yellowfang spots Raggedpelt and goes after him, but the two cats encounter a badger.
    • Yellowfang assists Raggedpelt in the fight while struggling with feeling his pain, continually reminding herself that she is not injured.
  • Sagewhisker requests to speak to Yellowfang.

  • Sagewhisker once again tries to convince Yellowfang to become a medicine cat, which angers Yellowfang.
  • Raggedpelt is injured but thanks Yellowfang for saving his life, rekindling their friendship.
  • Yellowfang leads a patrol to drive off the badger.
    • The patrol tracks the badgers to the border and decides to not pursue.
    • Yellowfang is grateful yet guilty over feeling relieved that she did not have to hurt them.

  • Raggedpelt and Yellowfang hunt together.
  • Littlebird asks Yellowfang to help her with a tick once Yellowfang returns to camp.
    • The elder warns Yellowfang against taking Raggedpelt as a mate.
  • Foxpaw and Wolfpaw earn their warrior names: Foxheart and Wolfstep.
  • Raggedpelt says he still thinks Russetpaw and Boulder are spies.
  • Yellowfang senses Nettlespot's pain and goes to see Sagewhisker about it.
    • Sagewhisker has Yellowfang take herbs to Nettlespot.

  • Sagewhisker tries to give Yellowfang herbs to deliver to Cloudkit.
  • Yellowfang joins Crowtail, Hollyflower, and Newtspeck's patrol.
    • The four cats discuss a strange looking lump of snow, deciding that it looks like a Twoleg and dubbing it a Noleg.
    • They discuss Russetpaw and Boulder, and how the two cats are adjusting to Clan life.
  • The patrol finds evidence of kittypets on their territory, and encounter Marmalade.
    • Marmalade attacks Newtspeck.
    • Yellowfang attempts to convince the patrol to leave him alone.
  • Back in camp, Yellowfang delivers Newtspeck to Sagewhisker, who has her assist once more.
  • Raggedpelt confronts Yellowfang and asks about the kittypet encounter.
    • He is angry when she tells him that Marmalade did not mention Hal, and runs off.
    • Rowanberry calls Raggedpelt Yellowfang's mate.
  • The Twolegplace cats invade ShadowClan's camp.

  • The ShadowClan cats fight the Twolegplace cats.
    • Pixie tells Yellowfang that they attacked because they believe Russetpaw and Boulder are prisoners.
  • Yellowfang tries to convince Marmalade that Russetpaw and Boulder joined of their own free will, but he is not convinced.
  • Yellowfang tells Cedarstar the reason for the attack.
    • He sends her to go find the two cats so they can explain for themselves.
  • Yellowfang finds Hal, Featherstorm, and Raggedpelt.
    • Featherstorm and Hal admit that Hal is Raggedpelt's father.
    • Hal taunts Raggedpelt about his heritage, and Raggedpelt attacks, ultimately killing him.
  • Russetpaw, Boulder, Frogtail, and Deerleap appear.
    • Yellowfang explains that the Twolegplace cats attacked the camp to 'rescue' Russetpaw and Boulder.
    • Raggedpelt tells them that Hal tried to attack Yellowfang when they see Hal's dead body.
      • Russetpaw reveals that Hal was her father.
  • Russetpaw and Boulder tell the Twolegplace cats that they like life in the Clans.
    • Marmalade explains that the attack was Hal's idea, and are shocked at his death.
  • The Twolegplace cats leave ShadowClan territory.

  • Leaf-bare hits ShadowClan hard and there is not enough prey despite constant hunting patrols.
    • Yellowfang and Raggedpelt are hunting, and Raggedpelt scolds Yellowfang for missing a catch.
  • They see Featherstorm and Russetpaw, and while Yellowfang praises Russetpaw's catch, Raggedpelt mocks it.
    • Yellowfang tells Raggedpelt to treat the apprentice better, as she is his half-sister.
    • Raggedpelt refuses to recognize Hal as his father, and tells Yellowfang that she is lucky he saved her.
  • Raggedpelt praises Yellowfang's next catch.
    • He wonders if they will become mentors soon, hoping that they would be leader and deputy together someday.
    • Yellowfang admits that she wants that, too.
  • Yellowfang and Raggedpelt return to camp, where Yellowfang picks up Littlebird's fever.
    • She goes to tell Sagewhisker, and the medicine cat tries to have Yellowfang treat the elder.
  • Raggedpelt tries to get Yellowfang to practice battle moves with him, but she goes hunting instead.
    • She finds several herbs Sagewhisker needs and brings them back.

  • Yellowfang wakes up as she feels Littlebird's struggle to breathe and tries to help.
    • Yellowfang treats Littlebird herself, even knowing the correct herb.
    • She reports back to Sagewhisker when she is done.
  • Yellowfang learns that WindClan has accused ShadowClan of trespassing.
  • Foxheart and Lizardstripe mock Yellowfang for doing medicine cat duties.
    • Raggedpelt agrees with them.
  • Yellowfang joins a hunting patrol with Archeye, Wolfstep, and Amberleaf.
    • They find a WindClan patrol on their territory.
    • A fight breaks out and ShadowClan loses, weak from lack of prey.
  • Yellowfang ends up in the medicine den for her wounds.
  • Sagewhisker tells her she must become a medicine cat.

  • Yellowfang is well enough to watch Russetpaw and Boulder's warrior ceremony.
    • Russetpaw becomes Russetfur.
    • Raggedpelt is eager for Yellowfang to resume her warrior duties.
  • Yellowfang treats Cloudkit while Sagewhisker is absent.
  • Sagewhisker once again asks her to accept her destiny to become a medicine cat.
    • Yellowfang thinks of Sagewhisker's age and how ShadowClan would fare with no medicine cat.
  • Yellowfang reluctantly agrees to become a medicine cat apprentice.
  • Raggedpelt is very upset with her choice, whishing she had chosen him instead.

  • Yellowfang officially becomes Sagewhisker's apprentice after talking to Cedarstar.
    • Her parents react well but Rowanberry is upset and Nutwhisker is somewhere in between.
  • Sagewhisker has Yellowfang do menial apprentice tasks and Yellowfang is displeased at having to answer to her.
    • Yellowfang practices controlling her power.
  • Stonetooth reasures Yellowfang and approves of her decision.
  • Yellowfang visits the Moonstone and talks with Silverflame.
  • Yellowfang tries to remove a thorn from Finchlight's paw but Sagewhisker takes over when she does it wrong.

  • Brackenfoot, Deerleap, Toadskip, Scorchwing, Rowanberry, and Finchlight are all injured due to rats attacking them near the Carrionplace.
    • They share what happened with the Clan, and the cats discuss how to move forward.
  • Yellowfang and Sagewhisker treat the injured.
  • Raggedpelt plans how to attack the rats.
    • Yellowfang goes to suggest an idea, but is reminded that she is no longer a warrior.
    • Despite not being able to actively participate, Yellowfang is still proud of Raggedpelt.
    • Sagewhisker comments that he is likely to be the next deputy.
  • The next morning, Cedarstar, Stonetooth, and Raggedpelt arrange battle patrols.
    • Yellowfang is jealous of Foxheart flirting with Raggedpelt.
  • Sagewhisker and Yellowfang join the group to treat any injuries that occur.
  • ShadowClan attacks the rats, but the rats begin to overwhelm the Clan.
    • Despite Sagewhisker's orders, Yellowfang joins the battle.
  • ShadowClan flees.

  • Several cats are severely wounded after fighting the rats.
    • Cedarstar loses his eighth life.
  • Yellowfang talks to Raggedpelt, who blames himself for the loss.
    • Cedarstar tells Raggedpelt to be kinder to himself, as he did everything he could.
    • Cedarstar decides to make Cloudkit Raggedpelt's apprentice when he is old enough.
  • Yellowfang attends her first Gathering as a medicine cat apprentice.
  • Yellowfang reflects on how she has gotten better at blocking out other cats' pain and how her skills have grown.
  • Raggedstar announces that Stonetooth is retiring, and names Raggedpelt his deputy in front of the other Clans.
    • This breaks the warrior code, however, as Raggedpelt has not yet trained an apprentice.
  • Sagewhisker announces Yellowfang as her new apprentice.
  • Days later, Raggedpelt and Yellowfang talk.
    • Raggedpelt admits he still has feelings for Yellowfang, and she admits that she feels the same.
    • The two become mates, and decide to keep their relationship a secret as it breaks the code.

  • Moons pass, and Yellowfang reflects on how she and Raggedpelt have managed to keep their relationship a secret.
  • Raggedpelt and Yellowfang hear screeching elsewhere in the forest, and find Rowanberry, Blizzardwing, Wolfstep, and Cloudpaw fighting rogues.
    • Cloudpaw is seriously injured.
  • Sagewhisker examines the apprentice back at camp, and says it may be better to let him succumb to his injuries.
    • Yellowfang refuses to allow him to die, and begins treating him herself.
    • She worries that his injuries are because of her actions with Raggedpelt.
  • Yellowfang dozes off, and has a vision of treating a young kit.
    • She realizes that she is part of a long line of medicine cats, passing herbs on to treat the injured.
  • Cloudpaw stirs, and Yellowfang reports to Sagewhisker that he has a fever.
    • Nettlespot begs to see him, but the medicine cats turn her away.
  • Yellowfang promises to save him.
  • Cloudpaw wakes later the next day, and as he begins to recover, the medicine cats allow him out of the den.
    • Cedarstar announces his intention to make Cloudpaw a warrior as soon as he's recovered.
    • Due to Yellowfang's tenacity, Sagewhisker decides to end her apprenticeship and make her a full medicine cat.

  • The next morning, Sagewhisker intends to tell Cedarstar that Yellowfang is ready to be promoted.
    • Yellowfang asks to speak to Raggedpelt first, and she reveals to him that she has made her decision and wants to be a full medicine cat.
  • Yellowfang is excited as she and Sagewhisker prepare for the half-moon Moonstone meeting.
  • At the Moonstone, Sagewhisker holds Yellowfang's medicine cat ceremony.
  • During her Moonstone dream, Yellowfang meets with Silverflame.
    • Silverflame shows her a vision of three kits, and promises to always be with her.
  • At the following Gathering, Sagewhisker announces Yellowfang as a full medicine cat.
    • While she is happy about the path she has chosen, she is still mourning for her lost relationship with Raggedpelt.
  • Yellowfang feels a strange pang in her belly, and realizes she is pregnant with Raggedpelt's kits.

  • Sagewhisker asks Yellowfang why she is so tired, assuming that she is eating too much.
  • Hollyflower scolds the apprentices for making a mess in the camp.
    • Lizardstripe assumes Hollyflower is happy to no longer be in the nursery, but Hollyflower explains that she loved having kits.
    • Lizardstripe reveals that she is expecting Mudclaw's kits, but does not look pleased about it.
  • Sagewhisker asks Yellowfang if she is okay once more, and Yellowfang worries what will happen if Sagewhisker finds out she is having Raggedpelt's kits.
  • Yellowfang has a strange dream, and is given a prophecy regarding her unborn kits.
  • Later, Yellowfang and Sagewhisker leave camp to talk.
    • Sagewhisker reveals that she knows about Yellowfang's pregnancy.
    • She tells Yellowfang to make a choice: commit to being a medicine cat, or don't.
    • Yellowfang promises to not stray again.
    • Sagewhisker tells Yellowfang to tell Raggedpelt about the kits.
  • Yellowfang tells Raggedpelt that they are having kits together, and he assumes she will stop being a medicine cat.
    • She tells him that he will have to raise them alone, and suggests giving them to Lizardstripe after they are born.
    • Raggedpelt accuses Yellowfang of being selfish and caring more for cats who are not her kin than her own blood.
    • He agrees to have Lizardstripe care for them as long as Yellowfang never reveals that she was their mother.
    • Yellowfang agrees, but silently promises to never abandon her kits.

  • Yellowfang begins to kit.
    • She heads for a dead tree she scoped out prior, knowing the patrols would not find her outside of ShadowClan territory.
    • Yellowfang bears three kits alone: Hopekit, Wishkit, and Brokenkit.
    • One of the she-kits is stillborn, and the other she-kit dies soon after birth.
    • She realizes the three kits are the ones from her last Moonstone dream.
    • Looking at Brokenkit, Yellowfang is immediately worried by the sheer anger on his face, and wonders if he is the cat from the prophecy.
  • Yellowfang buries her daughters before taking Brokenkit back to camp with her.
  • Yellowfang and Raggedpelt give Brokenkit to Lizardstripe to nurse.
    • Yellowfang tells Lizardstripe that the mother wishes to remain anonymous.
    • Lizardstripe initially does not want the kit, but Raggedpelt convinces her by explaining caring for a deputy's kit is an honor.
  • Yellowfang returns to the medicine den, where Sagewhisker gives her parsley to dry up her milk.
  • Yellowfang declares that Brokenkit is no longer her son as she falls asleep.

  • Sagewhisker goes to check on Brokenkit, and sends Yellowfang to gather moss.
    • Brightflower asks Yellowfang where she had been, and Yellowfang lies and says she is just tired.
  • Collecting moss, Yellowfang listens in to Foxheart training her apprentice, Nightpaw, and hears the tom coughing.
    • She brings him back to camp, but neither her nor Sagewhisker can find the cause of his cough.
    • Nightpaw is asked to help the medicine cats so they can keep an eye on him, but Foxheart scolds Yellowfang for not sending him back to training.
  • Rowanberry and Yellowfang eat together, and Rowanberry tells Yellowfang that everyone thinks the strange new kit belongs to Foxheart.
  • Yellowfang returns to the medicine cats' den and tells Sagewhisker what she has heard.
  • A few sunrises later, Lizardfang brings her kits out into the camp.

  • Yellowfang treks to Highstones for the half-moon meeting, reflecting on how Sagewhisker could not attend due to pains in her legs and belly.
  • Yellowfang and Hawkheart discuss the transition from warrior to medicine cat, and how they can still use their skills from being warriors to treat injuries.
  • Yellowfang sees Silverflame in her dreams, and asks why the StarClan cat did not tell her what would happen with the kits.
    • She tries to reveal what Molepelt told her about the kits, but Silverflame tells her to not speak ill of them.
    • Silverflame tells Yellowfang to not give up on Brokenkit, and shows Yellowfang Hopekit and Wishkit before she wakes.
  • Back in camp, Yellowfang scolds Deerkit, Tanglekit, and Runningkit for teasing Brokenkit.
    • She tells Brokenkit that she'll tell Lizardstripe what happened, but he begs her not to as she does not like him.
    • Instead, Yellowfang has him help her with her chores.
    • Yellowfang hopes that he'll become her apprentice.

  • Yellowfang keeps trying to teach Brokenkit about herbs, but the kit is not interested.
    • Runningkit, however, shows interest, but scampers away.
  • Yellowfang watches Nightpelt, one of the Clan's newest warriors, and worries over his persistent cough.
    • She tells the tom that Hawkheart treated a cat in his Clan with similar symptoms, but never found the cause.
  • Sagewhisker scolds Brokenkit for taking moss from the medicine cats' den, and the other kits make fun of him.
    • He turns his anger on Yellowfang and tells her to leave him alone, assuming she is the reason he is being teased.
  • A few days later, Sagewhisker suddenly collapses before dying, leaving Yellowfang as ShadowClan's sole medicine cat.
    • During Sagewhisker's vigil, Yellowfang apologizes for letting her down, mourning the loss of her beloved mentor.
